This is by far the best Passer ND has faced ,The d line has done a great job of getting pressure on the qb.,That has allowed ND to drop 7 in coverage. That has really helped the young corners.I don't know if ND can afford to just rush with 3 or4.we may get picked apart.I would like to see a little of what we saw last year in the first half against Florida State..What would you do. if you were coach D ?
Whatever KState did, let's do that...
It does cut down on play-action, since that takes a bit more time to develop, but in this game I'm pretty sure Coach D will use blitz sparingly, timing being everything. For example, if OK is at 3rd and 7 (or more) in their own territory during early drives, I would expect a blitz of some kind. But blitzing hurts in option and screen game, OK has killer short passing game, so I think we blitz when we minimize chance of getting burned by big running play.
They will anticipate a full effort from the front 7. I would blitz a CB on first down because 1. If it is a running play? No harm and maybe a lucky tackle. 2. If it is a pass? good chance of a sack or disruption or a hurry. A sack would set a tone and plant a seed that Landry has to worry about 9 guys potentialy coming at him, not just 7.
If their first possession is in good field position? I would just revert to our basic coverage. Regardeless, after the first play, I would play our usual 'D', which is excellent. If you change what you normaly do because you are worried, you have already lost.

My luck w/the Irish 20-6...GO IRISH!!!
2 Time POTW in a previous life Plus 1 on 24/7 = Gringo Mafia Professor Emeritus of Veterans Affairs.
FWIW, Kansas State rushed 4 or fewer on 43 of 45 passing plays.
3 time POTW
What!?!?!?! That's an insane stat. I totally would rush 5 or 6 early and often. That's probably why I sit on the couch instead of stand on the sidelines.
Totally agree with you - OU has a decent short passing game(when there's not much pass pressure) and I expect that they'll be using it as an answer to ND pass rushing(good luck!). I like your thought about ist down blitzing BUT timing is critical can't use this too many times. OU hasn't been steller in their pass blocking - Tuitt & Prince are very quick and have good enough technique that OU will have a hard time protecting Landry. I don't see OU getting much push rushing against ND and if ND can disrupt Landry's confidence/break his rythm well I just like the matchup of our dline vs OU's oline - I believe ND wins this one. GO IRISH!!

Getting into Landry Jones's head is a good reason to blitz early all by itself. He needs to doubt his pre-snap reads in addition to fearing pressure from anywhere.
But in addition to getting into Jones's head, there are other reasons to blitz early. First, if you plant the idea in the offensive line's heads that they can't stop our pass rush, even when we later bring 3 and drop 8, they'll be playing from a more wounded psyche and with an eye toward who might be blowing through in a second. It makes a three-man rush even better as a result.
Second, it puts ND's defenders in a position to experience a big play which is a good way to get them charged up in a hostile atmosphere.
Third, it takes Oklahoma out of their script right off the bat. Coaches like to script their first plays to develop a rhythm. It would be nice to introduce a more hectic element to the game before they have a chance to get comfortable.
Fourth, if we can force an early turnover it would set a nice tone as well.
We must blitz early.
