POTW 1/31/11 - 2/6/11
JC you still don't get it. It was not ND's responsibilty to make an announcement. It is Teo's. As Swarbrick stated, "This is Manti's story to tell". In fact, ND would have been in the wrong to "get out in front of it". That would have been a gross violation of Manti's privacy
GRINGO MAFIA-SERGEANT AT ARMS-
I just offered my opinion and it is posted to the main page, and I still consider myself a journalist.
Scored 4 touchdowns...in a single game. Polk High!
Certainly makes me question my membership. Those are some hefty accusations he's making without any evidence. Very, very disappointing.

Gringo Mafia: Black Ops & 'Family Recruitment'
Official thorn in JSapp's side
I just read your piece and nowhere do you pass judgement on Notre Dame or Manti Te'o. Nowhere do you call Notre Dame or Manti Te'o a liar. Nowhere did you claim that Notre Dame didn't care about the situation.
Most of your piece was doing the same thing everyone is doing: asking more questions. You prefaced a lot of your statements with "maybe" and "perhaps." That is very different from making blanket statements and casting aspersions.
If you're here to defend Shurburtt, I wish you wouldn't. His statements this morning were out of line. Much has been verbally vomited all over the internet and television since this story broke last evening. A lot of it - and I mean A LOT - is crass, cruel and without basis. Pure conjecture from "journalists" makes me want to puke.
This line in your piece is where everyone should focus ...
"So many things just don’t add up, and speculation is rampant."
Exactly right. More questions need to be answered. And the only person who can answer most of them is Manti Te'o. And until he chooses to answer these questions, many in the punditocracy will continue to offer "explanations" and provide "answers" and offer "opnions" as to what, who, when, where and why. When people start to conjure hypotheticals based on hearsay, rumor and innuendo - without knowing all the facts - and offer opinions without knowlege of the facts, then credibility and integrity are destroyed.
Keeper of all Somogyi secrets and swell quotes.
Wes, on the surface, there's really nothing wrong with Schurburtt having an opinion contrary to Notre Dame's statements on the matter.
But if he's using his platform to publicly espouse the notion that Notre Dame is covering this up consistent with past behavior (which he was asked a couple of times about, yet conspicuously avoided), then it exposes him as someone willing to entertain conspiracy theories about Notre Dame, unless he can support it, which again, he didn't take the opportunity to do.
And if he's willing to continuously entertain conspiracy theories about Notre Dame, then it says all I need to know about his obvious biases against the program. If you've got an axe to grind with the program, this is the time to pounce. So far, I notice similarities in those who have pounced.
Col. Jessep: You want answers?
JC Shurburt: I think I'm entitled to.

I have reviewed this entire thread and do have some additional thoughts for whatever
they may be worth. At the outset, let's examine what scott24105 stated: "JCShurburt
on Bill Kings show stated that Manti was in on it and ND 'covered it up like they have
covered up other things in the past.'"
Now, either Shurburt made those comments or he did not make those
statements. If he did not, if in fact what he said was simply that as soon
as ND "found out about it" ND should have gone public, then his statement
certainly can be relegated to the realm of opinion. At that point, the only
question for Shurbutt was---when did ND find out about,i.e. on December
26,27 based upon the unsubstantiated rendition of events by Manti or,
as most rational people would conclude, not until January 4, 2013(not
three weeks but 12 days ago).
But, my earlier comment on this thread was directed at the report that
Shurbutt had moved beyond the realm of opinion into the realm of accusation, as in
I, JC Shurbutt, on a public radio show, hereby accuse one Manti Teo
of knowingly lying to the public, of wilfully engaging in fraudulent deceit
and I also hereby declare that the Univerisity of Notre Dame knowingly
and willfully participated in such fraud by actively covering up such lie.
That is in essence what was reported Mr. Shurbutt said. And, folks
let's be honest---when someone says that Manti was in on the hoax
and that ND covered up, they have forfeited his right to hide behind
mere "opinion" and have entered a far more serious arena--that of
So, yes, I was surprised to see JC on the site. And, it was good that
he felt Notre Dame is the kind of institution that "should be out in
front of this." But, unfortunately, despite multiple posts, he too
equivocated and did not answer the salient question poised by the
thread: did you or did you not accuse Manti Teo of lying and the
Univeristy of Notre Dame of actively shielding his lie? Yes or No.
Amazingly, over 6 posts by Mr. Shurbutt and we could not get
an answer to such a simple question!
So, we are left to conjecture that Mr. Shurbutt did not answer the
question because it is highly probable he did make those accusations.
And, to us to take these kinds of things at least a little seriously,
if he did make them, based upon what evidence or what facts was
the accusation made? If he has facts, then let's all see them. Does
he not have an obligation to share them to us at a 247 site that
he purported is associated with big time? If he lacks such evidence,
why not limit his remarks to what he can verify?
One other aside. I am sure that had questions been raised about
a Georgia linebacker, IFR is probably right that we on this board
might be doing some chuckling. Fair enough. But, I am equally
convinced that had that been the case, JC Shurbutt would not
have gone on the radio decrying the SEC linebacker and, my
boys, those Georgia Bulldogs. You can take that one to the
