Where he said basically that he was done with school forever? I was hoping he'd take a 5th year
Wouldn't really read into it. From the 5th year's that I knew at ND, most of them are pretty much done with school. I think I read that KLM this year took one class and it wasn't intellectually challenging for him by any means.
A: I think you need to be enrolled in 12 credit hours to be considered a full time student. This is how it works for regular students and any student loans they receive, not sure about athletes and NCAA scholarship restrictions.
B: I would hope KLM wouldn't totally waste a $50k scholarship like that. You don't pay by the credit hour at old Notre Dame.
As far as Fox goes, recruiting better finish pretty dang well if he isn't asked back.
Until the coaching staff makes the offers to guys to come back for their 5th year, he has to assume he is done with school. If he is offered a 5th year, then he can make a decision.

I actually think he's not coming back. He has his degree, he'll probably be a late round selection if he goes this year. Also his class is going out with a National Title. If he comesback he's not going to play himself into a first round pick. With the new Rookie Pay scale it's best to get your 4 to 5 years over with and get the second contract unless you can play yourself into a 1st or 2nd round pick.
What are the benefits of him comingback? Maybe he gets to be a captain.
For graduate students, 6 credit hours or even 3 credit hours can be considered full-time status, depending on the program. How that impacts NCAA and athletic requirements, I have no idea, but if a student is enrolled in graduate studies, they could easily be taking only one or two courses and maintaining their status as full-time.

God. Country. Notre Dame.
This exactly. Also, I was a part-time student my final semester in which you pay by the credit hour, I'd imagine graduate school works in a similar manner when you are taking one or two classes.
This is the by-law from the NCAA Regulations on Eigibilty. You have to be 'pursuing' a degree, whether Graduate or Undergraduate, and be taking a minimum of 12 credits. The only way to avoid this is the Matt Leinart loophole where you have fewer than 12 credits left to complete your degree and are in your last year of eligibility. That is why he could take only Ballroom Dancing for the remaining credit he needed to graduate. He deliberately constructed his credits to be one class short of his degree. KLM cannot be playing and taking only one course if he already has a degree.
"(c) Be enrolled in at least a minimum full-time baccalaureate degree program (not less than 12-semester or quarter hours) and maintain satisfactory progress toward that degree, be enrolled in a full-time graduate or professional degree program (not less than eight-semester or quarter hours) or be enrolled and seeking a second baccalaureate degree at your institution. [Bylaws 14.01.2, 18.104.22.168, 22.214.171.124 and 126.96.36.199.1.4]
(2) If you are enrolled in less than a full-time program, you are eligible to compete only if you are enrolled in the last term of your degree program and are carrying credits necessary to finish your degree. [Bylaw 188.8.131.52.1.3]"
As for Fox, I think the guy has had an excellent year. He has been very good in pass coverage and much improved in the run stop. I don't know that we have anybody ready to jump in and be as good right away. I think Jarret Grace can be a very good backer in Manti's spot but that is just from watching him in practice videos and special team play. Replacing the Fox Calabrese tandem next year would be a big question mark.
