Looks like UM was fishing around after news broke about BK interviewing for Philly job..Outstanding young man that will do great things at ND. Pretty big statement made by DC Mattison...
When news broke shortly after the BCS title game that Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly was interviewing with the Philadelphia Eagles, Michigan defensive coordinator Greg Mattison took a little trip to Indiana. He wanted Ft. Wayne Bishop Luers linebacker and Notre Dame commitment Jaylon Smith to know he had options.
Can't wait to get this kid on campus in a golden helmet. He is going to be amazing. Sounds like a great kid, as well.
As for Michigan and Mattison...we would have done exactly the same thing. All is fair now in recruiting.
3 time POTW;
Mattison has always done a great job recruiting (one of the key coaches in my recruitment).
Directly after the U.S. Army All-American Bowl he was on the phone with Dymonte Thomas checking in and asking how things went.

What position do you think he is going to play? He says cat, I thought he was a dog LB... He could probably play the middle....
Seems to have a great head on his shoulders. I think we'll be talking about him in the same way we have Manti, another ND legend on the fiel and off.
Currently hanging out in Ft. Wayne for the day to get to know Jaylon. The people I've spoken to think he is being groomed to be at Cat. Based on what I've heard about his pass coverage skills it seems like he would be a great fit at Dog, but the Irish coaching staff has probably looked a little closer than I have at this point.
Smith will be accepting the Indiana Mr. Football award at Bishop Luers' homecoming basketball game tonight. Had a chance to chat with him this afternoon, seems like a pretty humble kid who is doing his best to not let the hype get to him.
I have always liked Mattison hated to see him leave for Iowa. He's a heck of a recruiter. What kind of coach was he JSapp? Don't remember the timeline of events around that time, but who followed Mattison? Was it Davie or was Davie HC already? How long was Mattison on Lou's staff at ND?
Mattison left for Florida when Willingham was fired and Weis was hired. In fact, as legend has it, Mattison was recruiting ND committs on behalf of Florida while still on campus until Weis told him to take a hike. Mattison had been on staff as DC since 1997 and left in 2004.
I am not doubting you IrishWon, you are a very good poster, but I am quite certain that Kent Baer was Ty's Defensive Coordinator. Didn't he coach under Bob Davie? I could be wrong though.
Gringo Mafia Strength Coach
Used to really think highly of Mattison but after the incidents of recruiting players to Florida after he left ND in 2004 and then lying to Omar Hunter to garner his signature in 2008 he has gone down many notches to me. As you recall he told Omar he would be there as his DC and then the next week went to Baltimore. This was after he vehemently denied going to Baltimore while recruiting Omar. Thought he became a bit slimey when he tied himself to Urban Meyer.
Mattison was DC under Davie and DL coach under Ty. I couldn't stand Mattison after Ty was fired, but at the same time you can't question his loyalty. If he's on your staff, he's 100%.

There is no bigger snake out there than Mattison. I had heard he was one of the biggest negative recruiters when it came to ND. I always thought he and UM were a perfect pair.

I believe I actually have a capsule I've written with my thoughts on Mattison as a recruiter for a Michigan publication, so I'll check to see if I can dig it up when I'm back in front of a computer.
I was on the tean for two years with HC Bob Davie and two years with HC Ty Willingham. Mattison was retained by the new staff. Going into my fifth year when I worked in the recruiting office as a graduate-student assistant, Mattison joined Urban Meyer at Florida and Jappy Oliver came to South Bend. Mattison's son, Brian, did play at Iowa, however.
Thanks for clearing it up Jason.
