Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly was in Grand Rapids earlier this week for a charity dinner. He spoke there about former Grand Valley State quarterback Cullen Finnerty who was found dead in the Michigan woods last weeks. He also talked about his current QB situation at Notre Dame, saying "in the present, we have Tommy Rees."
It's hardly a definitive statement of who will be taking the most snaps in August, but it appears that on some level Rees has a bit of a leg up on the competition. Not surprising at all given his 18 career starts.
Brian and Paqui Kelly, along with Joan Boand and Beatrice Idema, were honored during Wednesday night's GVSU annual Enrichment Dinner.
According to that article Kelly named his starter.

I don't know if he necessarily named a starter, but one QB on the team has 18 career starts and several saves out of the bullpen while the other two have zero on both counts.
Either way, Hendrix and Zaire have to be prepared to play this year the way Rees was last year in place of Golson.
I'm almost positive he didn't name one Lou. Someone should tell that writer Kelly doesn't name starters until late August.
If Rees is not the starter it will be major headlines.
So it turns out that Kelly's quote (not included in the story) was a bit more definitive than the story lets on. The Chicago Tribune confirmed today that Kelly's full quote from the dinner in Grand Rapids was:
"Everett won't be with us in the fall, so I've always moved forward," Kelly said. "I don't live in the past, I don’t spent too much time in the future, I live in the present. And the present is, I've got Tommy Rees, who was a starter for us, established player, and he’ll be our starter. And we think that Andrew Hendrix and Malik Zaire are guys that can contribute. But Tommy will be our starter."
Again, not a very big surprise, but a change from what he said a week ago when asked about the quarterback competition heading into training camp.
Everybody on our board has his or her preference but it
really would take a dramatic shift for Brian Kelly to
name anyone other than Tommy Rees as our starter
for our August 31, 2013 Temple game. It makes sense
to some; doesn't make sense to others. But, its reality
because Tommy is Tommy and Brian is Brian.
