Brey didn't turn it over 14 times in the first half, he isn't the problem
I see no reason why Notre Dame can't find eight guys who want an education and can play basketball with the athleticism required to compete in the big dance. Brey's record in the tournament is abysmal. As far as directing the program, I see no reason to believe he can do much more than he has. He hasn't been able to recruit super athletic players, so he runs a slow game and hopes the threes drop and that the lumbering guys inside can do some damage. The defense is slow to the ball simply because the players are slow of foot. Part of this can be the result of the style he plays, but part of it is also the limitations of the players he's recruited. Either way, it's his fault.
I want Notre Dame basketball to occupy a constant top ten position and get to the Sweet 16 two or three years out of five with a legitimate shot at going farther. I can find no reason to be confident that the next 13 years will be any different than the last 13 with Brey. I think he's a good guy, but if the administration shares my goals for the basketball program, it's time for a change. It's not going to happen, because the administration obviously doesn't share that goal, or because it stepped on itself with the long extension. But, honestly, I don't watch more than about five games a year because I can't stand watching Brey teams. They're cute when they're hitting, but just ugly when they play someone athletic. They could play Iowa State five more times, and they'd lose every one by at least 10.
