-- Nothing about what Swarbrick has learned has shaken his faith in Te'o one iota.
Sapp.Jason@synthes.com - https://twitter.com/Jason_Sapp
-- Notre Dame is so proud to have him as a member of the family and feel for him during a time of embarrassment for having been a victim of this case.
Jason, is Manti still an enrolled student, or has he graduated already?
-- Te'o told his coaches on Dec. 26 that he received a phone call from the number associated with his girlfriend, that sounded like her, and told him that she was not dead. He was unnerved by that news.
-- The coaches promptly reached out to Swarbrick and he arranged a meeting with Te'o upon his return. Met with him for 45 minutes and asked him to review every detail. He did so, was forthright, answered every question and was eager to share the info.
-- Swarbrick met with him again the next day to make sure all the details were correct, and Te'o was again an excellent partner in making sure the information was accurate. The info was taken to other leaders in the university for the deliberation of the next steps.
-- A decision was made to interact with an investigative firm to get to the root of what appeared to be a sophisticated hoax. With the work along the way, received a final report from them on Jan. 4.
Swarbrick: A decision was made to use the services of an investigative firm.
-- Swarbrick met with Te'o's parents on Jan. 5 in Miami to discuss the findings. Left the meeting with them understanding they had an opportunity to think about what they heard and engage with his future representation about consultation and keeping the university informed of his intentions.
Looks good for ND, whew!
Swarbrick: We received a final report from them on Jan. 4. I shared with the Te'o family those findings the next day.
-- Swarbrick's understanding is that they were to release details next week, but the story broke today.
Swarbrick said the Te'o family planned to release the story on its own next week.
On the investigation:
-- Can't share what Te'o's reps have done in regards to other avenues in the investigation being used.
At least we know what Jack was doing while Kelly was interviewing with the Eagles. He wasn't just ignoring this board, after all.
I may not be pretty, but I'm fast.....
POTW 1/31/11 - 2/6/11
Swarbrick said Te'o was not behind the hoax for several reasons, including the documentary "Catfish".
real funny Jack.
On what Swarbrick has seen to prove that Te'o is not behind the hoax:
-- He would refer everyone to the documentary called "Catfish". And the associated things found online. It is a scam that follows the exact art of this. It's shocking as far as the initial encounter, the relationship online, a tragic trauma and then a death.
-- As difficult as it is for Swarbrick to understand why people do it, people appear to do it as a sport for whatever reason.
-- The investigators through their work were able to discover online chatter among the perpetrators.
Swarbrick said the university's investigators found online chatter between the perpetrators.
On whether time was spent together and they met in Hawaii:
-- Going to let Te'o tell the story because he deserves that right. But this was exclusively an online relationship.
-- Not sure when Te'o will tell that story, but under the impression it will be some time tomorrow.
Swarbrick: "This was exclusively an online relationship."
“This is that time when you say winning’s a choice.“
POTW 12/23-12/29, 2013
On extending condolences:
-- The Te'o family did so, but Swarbrick isn't aware of the university itself doing it.
Swarbrick on how long relationship had been going on: "It began with an online reaching out to him, that he responded to."
