LOLOLOL - I LOVE LOU!!!
This is so true and what we have talked about for years on end. You aren't the ND head coach until 10-2 or even 11-1 becomes a "disappointment." That's what eventually kills you in this job and why Frank Leahy had to retire at 45 and Ara Parseghian at 51, which should have been their prime.
Brian Kelly could well have been teams than this one ... but maybe not the same record and the same sheer joy in "The Process" than this one because it came out of nowhere.
It's always more fun to be the hunter than be the hunted, sooner or later someone kills you.
The irony is that if Kelly wins the NC game, he enters the crucible.
Whatever abuse he took for two straight 8-5 years (Navy, Tulsa, South Florida) will be as nothing compared to the criticism that could dog him in the future.
Yes, those 8-5 seasons will turn out to have been small beer.
Go 13-0 in year three at ND, and any future losses are prohibited.
What, then, might Kelly be expected to achieve?
By my count, Leahy, in his 11 years, had an NC winner OR legitimate contender in 41, 43, 46, 47, 48, 49 and 53. In all, 7 superior teams (52 wasn't too shabby either) and 4 NC's.
Pareghian, in 11 years, had an NC winner OR contender in 64, 66, 70, 73 and 74. Five superior teams and 2 (maybe 3) NC's.
Holtz's 11 years saw NC winners OR contenders in 88, 89, 90, 92 and 93. Five superior teams and 1 NC.
For the record, Devine had 2 superior teams in 6 years: 77 and 80 and one NC.
And, for this, each of these coaches suffered from extreme pressure and intermittent criticism and disfavor, some of it severe.
Can Kelly even match any of this? I think he can, but God help him if he doesn't after raising expectations of future dominance.
