Irish sophomore Matt Hegarty has been cleared to resume full football activities starting March 15, according to his family.
Hegarty had two holes in his heart surgically repaired in December after suffering a mini-stroke a month earlier. Doctors were optimistic that Hegarty would fully recover from the surgery in time for spring football and it appears he is still on track to do so.
The 6-foot-5, 296-pound lineman is one of three players in contention to take over for Braxston Cave as the starting center for the Irish. He has been lifting with his teammates since early February and says he is back to squatting in the 500-pound range.
Hegarty will remain on medication until March 15. Doctors will take another look at his heart sometime in May to make sure there are no problems with the patches on his heart.

Folks, it appears Matt wants to play football; his family wants him to play football;
the medical specialists who performed the surgery and have been monitoring him have
said that, if all things continue, he will be able to play football. If things do
not continue to progress, then I would think the medical staff, the family and
Matt himself would re-evaluate. No one is going to push him to do something he
does not want to do and no one is going to dictate to the medical staff (who actually
have hands on the situation and know more than we who can only
speculate) to allow him to play if its not in his best interest to do so.
So, let's just relax and be pleased we can entertain the idea that he might be back.
