ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay currently has Te'o going 20th overall in this April's draft to the Chicago Bears. Here's why:
"I think this is around the range where he goes somewhere in 10-25 range. I think 10 would probably be too high. That has really nothing to do with the off the field stuff I jus tthink that's where he grades out as a player.
"Can he be a really good third down or passing down middle linebacker? I think this year helped him with seven interceptions. The more I study him the instincts got him in position and he was quicker this year because he took off some weight. You could tell he's moving better than he has in years past. Manti Te'o still to me is not a lock that's he going to be a great passing down middle linebacker. You love the ball skills and the instincts getting there but a lot of times they were tipped balls and things where it wasn't that difficult for him to make the interception. He was there to make the play."
"I like him as a player. I think he's a really good player, but I don't think he's a Patrick Willis that kind of value in a player in terms of the athleticism and the complete game. I don't even think he's a Luke Kuechly in terms of a complete game and that's why I have him in that mid to late first round range."
Bears need help on the offensive line. Hard to imagine them not grabbing a big ugly.
I may not be pretty, but I'm fast.....
POTW 1/31/11 - 2/6/11
They do. McShay's projection is more a matter of who he expects to be available at that point in the first round. If the top couple tackles go in the first 10-15 picks then they might be able to get an equal value in the second round as they would with the No. 20 pick. Te'o likely won't make it out of the first round.
Cincy at 21 looking like a good possibility for Te'o right now.
I agree with what he said. I really think that's where he would of been and should be drafted based on his skills regardless of the girlfriend thing. But I expect him to be a multiple time pro bowler.
