Really rough start for Connaughton and the Irish. He gave up six hits and six runs without getting a single out. He also hit a batter and walked in a run with the bases loaded. Releiver Don Hissa will take over after a two-run single to deep right field.
Hissa gives up one more on a sac fly but then works out of the inning. The Irish bats have a lot of work to trailing 7-0 after one inning.
Irish chip away in the second inning. 8-2 after a sac fly and a single from freshman Mac Hudgins.
Not a great start,lol.

Not a great finish either. Decided not to give the play-by-play, but the mercy rule went into effect after 7 innings. The Irish lost 12-2. It's a double-elimination tournament so the year's not over yet, but ND's back is against the wall. I'll have a story up on the home page shortly.
Game Two in Clearwater is off to a much better start. Notre Dame's Charlie Markson was the second batter of the game and he hit a home run over the left field wall. The Irish have added two more runs in the third. They lead 3-0.
The highlight of the game for me so far is the fact that Rutgers' left fielder is named D'Annunzio, which of course conjures up images of Caddyshack.
7-0 lead now for the Irish in the fifth inning. They've scored four so far in this inning with a combination of effective small ball (two successful squeeze bunts) and poor defense by Rutgers (two errors).

Maybe someone should call Craig Counsel and see what he's doing next season?
He could team up with another Craig, whose son Conor Biggio, is a freshman on the Irish roster this year. That would be a pretty good pair of consultants.
ND thirdbasemen Eric Jagielo hits a moonshot in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at 1.
Lets get a W!
St. John's added a run with a sac fly in the eighth inning. The Red Storm held on to win 2-1 and bring and end to Notre Dame's season.
