Why did we burn a year of eligibility for him if we didn't plan on giving him a shot to return a punt all year. I don't want to beat a dead horse.... But why not just keep Goodman back there and redshirt Neal? I don't get it. It's like Kelly thinks it's a positive to have a double negative (burn a year for Neal and not try to attempt to return a punt).
I see your point. I do think he is a very stable and SMART returner(knows when to let it go, and a good actor). This may come of a bit of a buzzkill, but Im starting to wonder just how much we can expect from Neal going forward. Do we really think he has much shake to him? I know the sampling is SO small but on the two times he had to return last week..well.. Im afraid to say it. But Im glad we have him. Maybe Kelly is just wading him into the shallow end of the pool before he takes over for Toma next year in the slot. Meanwhile, Toma hasnt caught a ball in 2 straight games. Just sayin...
II dont get it either. He has not had a good chance to return it once this year, it just doesn't make sense
I complety agree!
Neal was the highest ranked athlete in the country and for my money he is wasting his time back there.
The only reason I see this happening is for reasons beyond football.
He is not in Alabama or Flordia. Don't mean to sound repeatitive but Its Notre Dame the campus life is different school is harder and that takes a toll on a kid.
That being said the coaching staff is Probabley getting him comfrontable in the class room while at the same time getting him on the field.
Don't want to look too far ahead but look for Neal to have a GREAT season next year. This kid is ready to break out and will be a great slot receiver and punt returned for us next year.
With Neal, the future is all good
But it does still bother me a little bit he is not in on a pass play here or there. Kid is quick as anyone in the country. But like I said this is ND and you have to focus on the class first then football.
Shep r u serious? That's how we got em. Give him some time. He will be our guy. Early playing time is what we promised.
Neal has lacked opportunity because our return setup is very, very poor. There are always four to five defenders surrounding him when the ball arrives. The blocking in setting up returns is just awful. This is a very small nit on my part, because this team, minus the defense, is nowhere good enough to be 7-0. I said quite vocally that this would be our best team since 1993, and I think it is. But, I thought the offense would be better, the defense not quite as good, and the special teams substantially better than they are. We will not beat Oklahoma with the kinds of offensive performances we've seen to date, because they can both move the ball and stop their opponents from doing so.
Neal might turn out to be a star. After all, he's only a freshman. He might also turn out to be nothing. Again, he's just a freshman. But, I can't argue with a coaching staff that's 7-0 with horrible quarterback play. Today, we saw why Rees isn't starting. This year, he's been a great reliever, but as a starter today, he didn't look an ounce better than he did last year. Hopefully, EG can learn and have the light go on by next year. If he doesn't, we'll need Gunner, because we can't win a national championship with this kind of quarterback play.
I hope, next week, that Golson just has a heck of a game. I want to be Oklahoma right now more than I've ever wanted to beat anyone. I just don't see how it can happen unless Golson is light years better than he's been before. The performances against Navy and Miami don't mean anything. Their defenses surrender 30 before taking the field. Against good d's, we've been abysmal on offense. We'll need much, much more to beat the Sooners.
That's my point. I understand there is no blocking. So why are we wasting a year for Neal if the staff isn't stressing ST's and giving him a chance to do something Goodman isn't capable of?
Our punt return performance just drives me nuts.
Whoever is back there is always catching it with 5 guys in his face.
We are near the bottom AGAIN in our national ranking for punt return.
It just seems to me that a NC team does a lot of things right, including the little things. And getting a long punt return every once in a while helps to turn the tide of a game that is close or when your offense is struggling a little.
Sort of like the last two weeks.
Oh well. Coaches aren't listening to me on this one, for some reason.
Thanks for letting me blow off a little steam.

Davonte Neal isn't interested in staying 5 years anyway. It won't make a difference.
Neal has done nothing with very little opportunity . I can honestly say that I was expecting more and we all were. There was talk on this board about him having an impact as a freshman like rocket and black mamba. I'm a little concerned that he is not as advertised.
Wow. Some of you writing him off already. With our pathetic scheme Rocket wouldn't be able to make a return. Give him some slot opportunies and let's see what happens
I agree- and I was thinking how can this guy NEVER get a chance to get going- then I remember watching teams that are well schooled in Spec Teams and the defenders become blockers- ala HOLTZ teams - poor kid has no room when the ball is punted-
THEY DONT HOLD UP ANYBODY- annoying
Nice post. +!
Makes the ground a bit more fertile to further express worry about Neal's long term ability(Im worried he doesnt have quite the "shake" we hoped he would), our punt return's continued torpor(yes, Im aware Neal is given very little space on few occasions) and Golson's need to work at warp speed to prep for OU next week.
An emotional recharging of the batteries is necessary. Kelly have to beg them to feel happy was a bit bizarre. Just shows you how much energy was used and let out of the stadium last Saturday. But they need to get their cage rattled in a loud and hostile environment to see if they can face the crowd and punch back on the road. Golson needs to play steely eyed.
I just wish we could see him get some snaps on offense and run some plays to get him the ball in space. Like a bubble screen or end around, something!!!!!!
Guys this has been driving me crazy all year too. Hopefully they've been waiting to show punt return scheme against opponents that we will definitely need it for. (OU,USC) I don't understand that or the fact we have a dynamic athlete calling fair catches!! Rocket wouldn't have been the Rocket with this mess
My issue is that as much as we all ask and beg for it why won't anyone ask this question to Kelly ??? It's terrible and there is no explanation!!!!!!!
This post is ridiculous.....Neal has been solid fielding these punts with no opportunity for return due to the lack of hold up At the line! The line lets these guys run right down the field untouched!! He never has a chance! He's done a great job of hanging on to every punt and this is all we should ask of him right now!
The punt return team is beyond lousy...they do not give Neal a chance..the four rushers go up to the secondline of defense and stop...the others let the the opponents run down field with no attempt to block anyone..it is the worst scheme I have every seen for any team..can someone at B&G get some answers from someone on how this is continued to be allowed...They are wasting Neal's year of eligibility if they don't use him in the games after Oklahoma in the offense then this plan is not only stupid but inane..
I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not...
You can't expect not out of Neal when he hasn't had a chance to do anything
You do realize that we're upset with the lack of blocking FOR Neal right?? We ALL agree Neal has been excellent
