Did you know an old Irish football great is also credited with being one of the founders of Mother's Day?
Frank Hering played quarterback and coached Notre Dame from 1896-1898. He also coached the basketball and baseball teams and became the school's athletic director when his playing days were over. He's also credited with, among many other things, being an early champion of the idea of Mother's Day.
As a law professor at Notre Dame, he had students write monthly postcards to their mother to tell them they were appreciated. He made speeches and petitioned to have a national holiday for Mother's Day as early as 1904.
WSBT in South Bend produced a feature on Hering earlier this week that outlined his contributions to the day and his life in general. I thought it was a pretty cool story...
Did you know Mother's Day has roots right here in South Bend?
So it's not a "Hallmark" Holiday? Great concept but like Christmas and everything else is has become over advertised and way too commercial to the point it's losing the true meaning and just becoming a day to buy stuff.
