Ara Parseghian told this story last summer. On the eve of the 1973 national title meeting with Alabama, there was a luncheon where Bear Bryant had maybe one cocktail too many, and when it was his time to speak, he mentioned what an honor it is to play a school like Notre Dame with someone like "Father Hamburger" as its president.
Shortly after the luncheon, Parseghian saw Father Hesburgh walking toward him, thinking he was going to wish him good luck. Instead he said, "Ara, in your 10 years here I've never asked you for anything ... but it would please me greatly if you would win tomorrow."
Bryant later sent a congratulatory note to Father Hesburgh that was displayed in the trophy room, and he also sent him a houndstooth hat that Father Hesburgh often wore, noting with great pride that he received it from The Bear.
Great job by Fr. Hesburgh, I guess the content of that speech will remain between the players, coaches & the rest of people present in the room ?
