It's obvious from last night's game that there is an athletic quality present in many other squads that make the tournament that we have not been getting at ND. I think our guards, Biedschied (although I've been disappointed with his confidence and poise this season), Auguste, and hopefully Jackson have that athletic ability. Connaughton is moderately athletic but not fast, and Cooley is pretty athletic as well but again not fast or quick -- just very determined.
This game reminded me a lot of the Florida State game. I think Mike Brey is perfectly suited for the Big East style of play where there is less transition game. Iowa State made it a point on defense to take advantage of our sloppy passing game and inability to dribble around people and on offense to move us around as much as possible with steals leading to transition baskets and an aggressive drive-kick-pass offense.
Bottom line is, Brey runs his style well, and his style fits the Big East. When he is exposed to different styles, he is not .669 at all. The Tourney is that kind of environment. This is why many say during the season that he is a great coach, while others are just as disappointed with him as coach at Tourney time.
Therefore, I finally agree with those who hold the opinion that this is Brey's ceiling, and I think the head coaching job should be at least looking around now that we're looking to move conferences. If not, he's still a decent coach, and we'll just have to hope recruiting can change the makeup of this team.
