I still remember the ashen look on Bob Davie's face on Signing Day 1999 when QB C.J. Leak's fax didn't come through ... and then a year later hear the yelling of joy in the background when Carlyle Holiday's fax came through when the staff thought he was headed to Nebraska.
More and more often it seems as if the back-and-forth process of recruiting ends as quickly as it begins, with several of this year's high-profile commitments backing off their promises.
Here was my favorite part of the article (which should probably be pinned at the top of the board):
Former Georgia recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner told ESPN how little a commitment really means. In the end, a verbal commitment is nothing more than words coming out of a recruit's mouth, he said.
"Now, really, a commitment means nothing, it means absolutely nothing," said Garner, who is now the assistant head coach and defensive line coach at Auburn. "We can say what we want to -- 'We have X number of players committed.' But how many of them are actually committed? 'I am committed, but I am taking all five of my visits.' Is that really committed?
"Committed means, 'Hey, I like you and I am going to look around and if I don't find anything better, then, yeah, I am going to stay with you.'"

Overall, Ham, I agree. However, if we go through the years and even decades, you will find that about 90 percent, if not more, of ND verbals are well set with their choice. That's because ND does "shop down a different aisle," as Kelly said.
Even during that 3-9 train wreck season in 2007, everyone but Omar Hunter kept his word to Notre Dame because they were that proverbial "fit" — and it ranked among the top 2 classes too.
The problem is all the publicity for the ones who do depart, a la Greenbery or Darby. It's like plane crashes. There are never any headlines about the thousands or millions that depart or land safely. But the one that crashes will get all the news.
I said that to my wife once....and then the fight started.

Well, Lou, not surprisingly, every individual or example in this article was from an SEC team, so that's the "aisle" the reporter was shopping. I agree that ND's percentage has to be well into the 90's, but I would still pin the quote at the top of the board. Even when it's only one threatened defection, it drives the board into a frenzy. The expectation, even if it's much more emotional than intellectual, is that the retention rate of verbal commitments should be 100%. As soon as a key recruit gives his word to ND, many people immediately start building depth charts around him. 90% or not, you don't want to be doing that kind of stuff until after the first Tuesday in February. As Samuel Goldwyn, or one of those old time film moguls said, a verbal contract isn't worth the paper it's written on.

Is recruiting the only thing keeping Fax machines around?? I have not used one in at least 6-7 years. I recall using one to send in a registration for a business association several years ago and listening to the dialing and noise like dial-up internet....the only reason I remember is that I had to re-sent at least 3 times because the machine on the other end was not functioning properly....
