We contacted over 10 strong prospects for our football recruiting position, invited four to our South Bend office for interviews and had three in that group come in to meet us.
After the first interview, we thought we had our man. The second candidate blew us away, too, and we were thinking this is going to be a hard decision. Then the final prospect, Tom Loy, showed up. He came with a strong recommendation from the management team at 247Sports.
We were immediately impressed with Tom’s passion for football recruiting, his knowledge of players, his upbeat attitude and his desire for the job. We enjoyed a good lunch together, and then Lou Somogyi took him on a quick tour of Notre Dame.
During their ride through campus, Lou pointed out the balcony outside Brian Kelly’s office, where several people were standing. That’s when everything changed.
“That’s Elijah Hood. He’s the running back from North Carolina who is visiting this weekend,” said Tom of the soon-to-be Irish commitment. He posted that news on the board while he and Lou were heading back to the office, and the message received over 2,300 views.
On Sunday, after Hood announced for Notre Dame, Tom got the first interview with the future Irish player.
It was quite an audition!!
We offered Tom the job, he accepted it and he is moving to Mishawaka in mid-May. He will start full-time with us on Monday, May 20, but I’m sure he will be around some before then.
Tom is a 2006 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania in Indiana, Pa. He was worked part-time in the recruiting field for the past five years for both the 247Sports and Rivals networks, while also holding down a full-time job in client services for a major insurance company.
Tom has a great work ethic, a terrific passion for football recruiting, an upbeat attitude, a competitive nature and a contagious excitement for covering Notre Dame. Will he be Jason Sapp the first day? No, but that person doesn’t exist. Can he, in his own way, be eventually as good as Jason. We are confident he can.
We believe this can be comparable to replacing Kyle Rudolph with Tyler Eifert.
Add Tom to 247Sports national recruiting analyst Steve Wiltfong, who has done a tremendous job of keeping our football recruiting coverage at a high level during this search, to Will Biggers, who will be contributing more as soon as he finishes final exams, and to the team of experts at 247Sports — and we are confident BlueandGold.com will continue to offer the best coverage of Notre Dame football recruiting on the web.
Thanks for your patience during our search process.

May I recommend that, as part of your job responsibilities. you learn to properly identify our head coach. :)
Welcome & congratulations Tom!
Welcome, Tom. You will soon discover that you are covering recruiting for the best fans around. By that I mean the BGI fans, not just ND fans in general. You have huge shoes to fill, and we will be here rooting for your success! Go get 'em.

I cannot express in words how truly excited I am about this opportunity. I took my first trip to South Bend last weekend and I was in awe of everything. What a beautiful place to go to school and play ball.
I'm ready for the fun times and hard work that lie ahead and being a part of the growth of BlueAndGold.com. I promise that you won't be disappointed with the results and the content here at the site.
This is an incredible team that Stu has in place here and you won't find a harder working group of people. They were incredibly welcoming and I can't thank them enough for that. I'm beyond excited and just ready to get to work.
I also look forward to meeting some of you that are in and around the South Bend area. Taking some time out of the office to meet the members of our Notre Dame community is a must and needless to say, it will be fun talking recruiting with such passionate fans.
Thanks for the support and the well wishes and if you need anything, you can PM me on here at anytime or reach out to me on Twitter: @TomLoy247

Congrats! Look forward to meeting you in the future.
Big shoes to fill Tommy Loy. Fortunately we have credited you with bringing Hood to Notre Dame so you will be given some slack as you adjust to your new surroundings and fans that take obsessive to a whole new level. Haha. Congratulations on the job and I know I speak for everyone when I say we look forward to seeing what you will bring to the already-stacked roster of Blue & Gold staffers.
Lastly, let me know what you think of Mishawaka. My company owns the Fairfield Inn there so I am keeping an eye on it waiting for the General Manager role to come open.
