I am just wondering what everyone thinks should be the pre-season top 5.
Here is mine;
5) Notre Dame
6-Time POTW Winner, 4 time at BGI and 2 at 24/7
2- Ohio St.
3- Texas A&M
4- Florida St.
5- Florida/ Georgia (haven't made up my mind on this yet)
I don't believe Stanford is a top 5 team after losing so much on offense and their best defensive player. I Notre Dame in the top 10. Other teams of note I have in the top 10 are Oregon and LSU.
The overwhelmingly popular choice in 2012 has Alabama No. 1 again with Ohio State the most likely foe in the title game. Here were some early 2013 preseason rankings of Notre Dame by some major outlets:
• Sporting News has the Irish the highest, No. 4 behind Alabama, Clemson and Georgia.
• SI.com’s (Sports Illustrated) Andy Staples places head coach Brian Kelly’s team at No. 6, with Alabama, Texas A&M (which hosts Alabama on Sept. 14 in an early season showdown), Stanford, Oregon and Ohio State rounding out the first five.
• Athlon has Notre Dame No. 7.
• USA Today and CBSSports.com both have the Fighting Irish No. 8.
• ESPN.com had Notre Dame the lowest at No. 12.
2. Texas A&M
4. Ohio State
9. Florida State
Of course OSU is slated to be in the NC game...they have the easiest schedule imagineable. Therefore, I'd put them at #2 based solely off of scheduling considerations but I don't think they're the 2nd most talented team out there.
How sweet it would be to see Buffalo come out and punch OSU right in the mouth! Give them the Appalachian State treatment !!!
If OSU loses a game then something went horribly wrong, that's how easy their schedule is. Alabama, OSU, Stanford, A&M, Clemson, Oregon, and ND is how I see it.
Lou - Great information. What are the rankings of ND's opponents?
ESPN actually has them 9 now.
Attended: Michigan @ ND 2010 Southern Cal @ ND 2011 Stanford @ ND 2012 BCS National Title Game vs. Alabama-Jan 7, 2013 ND @ Air Force 2013
Thanks for the update, Brenner. Mine were taken from January, the week after the season. Pretty good jump in one month. At that rate, they can get to No. 1 by May.
That was purely Mark Schlabach's Way Too Early ranking in January and then his modified ranking after coaching changes and player departures for the NFL being taken into account.
Stanford is the only opponent consistently ranked in the top 10 and even top 5. Michigan and Oklahoma are both in the top-15 range, maybe even sneaking into the top 10. Most people aren't buying into USC right now because of the way that program fell the past few months in a number of different areas.
Michigan State might be a top 25 dark horse but it lost some pivotal mainstay after a so-so season. I wouldn't be surprised if Arizona State gets some pre-season votes for top 25.
2 OSU (only because of SOS)
4 Texas AM
10 South Carolina (because you must have 6 SEC teams in the top 10)
I have to say that the only team that surprises me is FSU. They are an annual pretender.
