I think I'd definitly have someone contact Jon Gruden and Saban's agent through back channels and let them know about the ND contract on the table for $6 for Jon and $10 Mill per year for Nick

We do not know what is going on in conversation between the two - but I guess all is fair in negotiating.
Tough call. Swarbrick probably doesn't want to find himself pants-around-ankle-ed. But he probably has a better read on the situation than I do.
It's either the best thing or the worst thing that Swarbrick has a reputation as a shrewd negotiator as a former attorney.
Negotiating should be fairly simple at this stage.
Kelly should be paid on par with the highest paid Coach in CFB who has never won a NC.
Our staff should be paid on par with the highest paid Coaching Staff who has never won a NC.
All should have escaltors in their contracts to bump their pay if we win a NC or something spectacular happens
While this all makes sense in a "fair world" - I disagree with it because it isn't fair.
Being that it is Notre Dame. One of the largest and most recognizable brands in sports. I think regardless of titles, the job commands a top 3 salary. Winning is what gets you to #1 and waaaay beyond #2.
Same goes for the assistants. IMO they should be getting paid much more because of what this University and fanbase desire. These guys, because of ND's brand and recognition, are going to be on more and more people's lists for coaching vacancies. Which is why you need to entice them that being an ND assistant is better then coaching at Buffalo. Or Idaho. Etc.

Saban could not win at ND because he could not get all those gangsters and thugs. Saban never had to be responsible for academics in the SEC.
No AD gives a shit about ND brand when it comes to hiring a Football Coach, except Notre Dame's AD.
Just because a Coach worked at ND doesn't make him more attractive.
Doing well at his job makes him more attractive. Having a great personality that will get the boosters excited makes him more attracitve.
Sorry but Saban would win at ND because he's a winner. He can take a kid and Coach them up. He might not get a 5 star stud like Lacy. But I think he'd manage just fine with a 4 star stud like Cierre Wood.
Coaches at ND have little to do with academics. It's the Administration.
Nick is a great coach yes and I still am thinking about all the national titles and the run of Big 10 titles he had at MSU. I mean he was dam near another Duffy Daugherty. (/sarcasm off)
NOT a tuff call- I say if he is looking you better get on your horse and get serious about finding top level stud to keep the big mo- this cupboard is hardly bare- just went 12-1 get serious and find a good college coach... go for it and lose BK now
If Swarbrick is the great AD I know him to be - he has a small list of coaches to replace Kelly. The list has been in place for a longtime. Like Rockne - accidents happen and one never knows when the next coaching search must begin.
Swarbrick works behind scenes and leaves no fingerprints. All is taken care of ... we just need to hold our anxiety about not knowing.

Let me quote Brian Kelly on this one, "If your looking, we're looking." I don't know if there is an honest college coach out there, though.
If we win championships its because we have the RKGs, character people. When the other guy wins, he does it with thugs and criminals.
Barrett Jones and AJ McCarron are about as far away from being thugs and gangsters as you can get. Alabama is simply a very well put together team as they get, Saban laid that foundation nearly a decade ago and all he has to do now is maintain it. Let's have some respect and maybe one day we will be in the same spot.
And dont forget--
"If an asst of mine applies for a LATERAL move(kinda like HCoach to HCoach in this case), you better get it" - Brain Kelly
