It's easy to see it both ways. We had our backups in for the whole 4th quarter, and they deserve (and need) reps. It was also great for Toma. BUT, the other side of the argument is that "is there (or should there be) an unwritten rule regarding running the score up against the military academies?" (no matter how competitive they have been against us). In my humble opinion, we should have taken a knee on the 13 yard line in respect to these great kids who are training to put themselves between the enemy and my children.
Nice that this is the only controversy of the day! GO IRISH!
I can see your point but this is the first game and an opportunity for players to get real game time experience! If it were a close game and our starters were still in then take a knee.
In my eyes, the men of the Naval academy are the sort who would be more offended if we took a knee, rather than competed to the very end. I can't speak for them, but guessing from their nature and gutsy play they want their opponents to take them seriously at all times. The idea that we would take a knee to "spare their feelings" is something they would dislike a lot.
I might be wrong, but that is my impression.
Second team in, let me rephrase that, Toma was in at running back. The drive was mainly handoffs, between the tackles, or qb runs. That was absolutely an ok thing to run a play up the middle. I said out loud that a knee was coming, but I was happy for Toma that I was wrong.
Did you see the reaction from the players on the sideline when Toma came running over? It was priceless, the other seniors were so happy for him. Those are the moments that bond a team. That may sound a little over stated but remember last year when Kelly seemed to push a wedge between "his recruits" and the rest of the team. This I think was a moment he showed we are a team and we celebrate together.
This touchdown was a good thing, and yeah for Toma.

Yes - it's not ND's job to slow its offense down.
USC nor OU will let up on the Irish
I think a knee is more offensive.
This is what Coach Kelly has not been able to do and what makes good teams great. It adds depth and game experience to the 2s and 3s. It has built consistency in teams like Boise St. and Oregon. Build a good lead then play your 2s and 3s in a competive manner. Don't let up til Febuary.
I remember reading in one of Lou Holtz's books when he was the HC of William & Mary, they played Bowden's West Virginia and got pounded. Holtz asked Bowden why he ran the score up (I believe they were friends at the time). Bowden's reply, "Its not my job to keep the score close."
Ever since then, as long as your not trying to keep running the score up (hail marys, trick plays, etc...) I want more points.
I have no problem with scoring the last TD.

2 time POTW winner on some dates I can't remember from 2yrs ago at BNG,
POTW: 1/3/11- 1/9/11, 6/20/11-6/26/11
Score as many as you can. It's Navy's job to stop Notre Dame, not Notre Dame's. Navy isn't going to stop playing, and I'd call it more of an insult to take pity on them.

Did you see the joy on Toma's face, as well as happy his teammates were for him? Of course it was the right decision.
+1 my man. Well said
