Brey has brought some respect to ND with a system of stand around excellent shooters. He is a player's coach and most likely well liked by the adminstration also. He has done just well enough to keep the hounds off his back and keep his job. ( again the fact that he is a well liked, nice guy has helped him tremendously.)
As I said in another post, he recruits these types of players for his system. The result is players are not athletic enough to compete with athletic teams in tournaments when most teams up their game. This leads us to one of our yearly controversies " is it that Brey can't recruit athletic types or he just can't get them into ND ?" I think he wants shooters first to fit his system. Hence we don't get athletic players.
I believe that the ACC will end his career at ND because it is better than the overhyped Big East. I foresee us dropping below the middle in the ACC and that will end the Brey era. Then, the fact that he is a nice guy who is well liked won't matter. This will lead us to another of our yearly controversies " Brey is doing as well as anyone could expect at ND and be careful what you ask for because the next guy may not do as well.
In a couple of years, I think that we will find out if Brey is as good as it gets or not.

Get real if you think the acc has been better then the big east. For years the ACC has been two very good teams, duke and nc, a third team that is good for a period of time but can't sustain it and then overhyped, underperforming teams fill out the rest of the conference. Three of the top five teams in the ACC next year will be former big east teams, Syracuse, Pitt, and ND. That's not counting Miami a former BE team.
Did I say the ACC "has been" better than the Big East. No, I did not. I said that the Big East is overhyped and some years it is and some years, it has been very strong. What I did say was that the ACC with Duke, NC, Syracuse, Miami, Louisville, NC State will make it difficult for ND to do as well as it did in the Big East.
The point is that it is my opinion that with Duke and NC, we will have four automatic losses each year. In the Big East, ND could beat one of the top teams ion the Big East. It remains to be seen how well we do against Miami, Syracuse, Louisville and the rest of the middle eschelon teams such as NC State,Maryland, Pitt, FSU, Virginia, etc. In the Big East, ND was able to beat the top teams on occasion.
Not getting out of the first round will be the end of the Brey Era.
They'll be able to beat Duke and NC.
The ACC will be intresting. So much of Brey's success in the Big East was from knowing how to play off the style of each opponent. More so,
Brey knew how to recruit to play against those teams. The ACC will present different challenges in style and in talent. I'm sure this causes him
great consternation. If success doesnt come early, I doubt he will have time to make program adjustments. The wolves will likely be at the door.

I am a big fan of coach Brey....and I agree with irishm...something needs to change or we will be in the bottom half if the ACC ...the Big East is overrated plain and simple
CITY OF CHAMPYINZ!!!!!!
Brey will most likely over-achieve in the regular season and choke in the tournament (be it NIT or NCAA). Reference 2000-13.

I don't want to be pessimistic, but N.D. will lose 4 out of 5 games to these teams every year unless program is improved.

In order to clarify what I think will happen to ND in the ACC, let's look at BC. As Big East members, they went to the second round of the NCAA tourney in 01, 02, 04, 05. They join the ACC and in 06 they go to the second round and in 07 to the sweet 16. 06 and 07 are the result of carry over talent from the talent that they could get while in the Big East. In 08 no tourney, 09 they go in the first round. BC has not made the tourney in 2010, 11, 12 or 13.
BC doesn't have Big East exposure any more, and they simply started a downhill trend to mediocre. Al Skinner was fired. The new coach Donahue was 9 and 7 in league in 2010, 9- 22 for the season in 2011, and this year, BC was 7 - 11 in league and 16 -17 over all. I believe that is what is going to happen to ND in the ACC. It will be the end of the Brey era and " the burn" and we will hire someone else to "change the culture".
I hope that I am wrong, but the only way that I see this type of scenario not happening is that Brey is able to recruit better athletes than he has, can shelve " the burn" offense and play aggressive basketball. This leaves us with the question most of us are unsure of "has Brey been smart by adjusting his offense to the type of player that he can get at ND or is foolish in recruiting " burn" type of players to fit his "burn" style and not going after more athletic players ?
Big east isn't overhyped this year. 2 teams in the final four. Great way for it to end. The best basketball conference year in and year out with half the teams left.
My luck w/the Irish 20-6...GO IRISH!!!
