God. Country. Notre Dame.
if Stanford employs that defense, we won,t score anything but maybe a couple of long field goals.........
"I sometimes think some of you guys don't watch much football other than ND"
Another is "I bet you never played the game". And this gem... " You're not a loyal fan".
These are the the type quotes I reject outright.
Why? Because someone isn't doing cartwheels or waving pom poms? We spend nine months discussing twelve games. We are hyped up by all the propaganda, by plans to go to games, by the failings of other programs, by the recruiting results, etc. Then the actual games are played.
For example, this off season we salivated over the prospects of winning at least ten games. Some even ventured running the table. Anything less nine was unacceptable to 90% of us. A BCS bowl was a foregone conclusion to many. We were going to destroy USC and "Lame" Kiffin. USF was going to be a tasty morsel before we feasted on Michigan.
Then reality entered the picture.
Kelly's frenetic meltdown in Game 1 and the pulling of his starting QB at halftime.... for good. The collapse in the 4th quarter at Ann Arbor. Then the slow return to equilibrium and progress leading up to the USC game where we got our nosed rubbed in it at home followed by a ham-handed decision by the coach to distinguish between "his" players and the previous coach's. Then a systematic march through the soft part of the schedule culminating in a very close call, again at home, against a 3-7 BC. Now we find ourselves traveling to Stanford with a chance to reach that nine win plateau and get some valuable payback in the process.
We have a very talented team as the record shows. But the reality is that we also have a one dimensional QB, a coach who is till learning to compete at this level and how to handle this kind of talent, some injuries and disappointments and a host of "what ifs".
So there is a lot to talk about. And it is not all sunshine and shamrocks. That's sports, fellas. For those of us who don't see Rockne when we look at Kelly or fail to envision John Elway when we look at Rees, that doesn't make us disloyal or ignorant of the game. Nor does it mean the end of the world or that they are bad people. It means we see things as they are, not necessarily as we wish they would be. And never question our love for the Irish. If that were the case, we wouldn't be here to begin with.
Editors note: Played the game nine years. Coached it six years. Notre Dame football fan since 1964 ( 47 years ). Board member here at least five years. I may not have written the book but I've read it!
George, you make good points, but the fact remains that some people don't watch much football besides Notre Dame, nor do some have historical perspective. Perhaps you do, which is fine, but it does not alter the fact that many opinions here, positive and negative, are colored by a present day Notre Dame-centric view.
