Its obvious Toma is a player. He doesn't have the great physical attributes but he catches most everything that comes his way. He is the shiftiest receiver since Tate and runs like his hair is on fire. He was miles better than Riddick last year and thank god Riddick got hurt or else he would have never gotten a chance to play. He's did everything he could last year to make it impossible for Kelly to take him off the field. I wish we had ten Tomas.
No, Toma is not wes welker. He is a George west/David grimes clone.
@flanker- If we had 10 Toma's we would be Navy. Not exactly what ND should be striving for.
lol not sure if we need ten Tomas but I definitely agree with the spirit of flanker's post. Toma just seemed able to get open and find space out there. He will be critical early in the season while our young slot guys are learning. Riddick, on the other hand, never seemed comfortable at receiver. I'm really looking forward to seeing him play running back full time because I have no doubt he can be a playmaker.
No if ND had 85 Tomas they would be Navy. 10 Tomas among 75 Lynch, Floyd types is what ND should be striving for.
I have tremendous respect for Toma, but he can not be our #2 receiver. He is very good when he is not a feature receiver. But, the truth is we need some guys with more athletic ability to cause more fear in the opposition and let Toma do his thing as a complementry receiver.
Slot receiver is supposed to be the most explosive/biggest playmaker on the team in Kelly's system. Toma isn't that. Toma is the John Goodman of slot receivers.
No team has 75 5 star (Lynch Floyd types) players. I like Toma, but he shouldn't be more than a backup at ND.
Edit- reply meant for flanker.

Of course not...missing the point. These are guys every championship caliber team has. Guys that just make plays. Of course they are the complimentary players to the stars but who was the team's second best wide receiver this year. Toma was, and he only played minutes in the last third of the year. Play the guys that move the chains. Do you think Toma drops the ball on the crossing pattern like Jones did against South Florida? No way. Toma is the Goodman of slot receivers? Is that not the most humilating thing you can call a receiver? Does he barely catch the ball and then fall forward a yard?
I wish Toma was a back-up. It would mean the team had top flight players across the board. Look at the current roster. Not seeing it.
I don't think TOma was the #2 player last year. Floyd, Eifert, Jones were all better in my opinion. I think the talent coming is much better than Toma and they will pass him quickly. For the same reasons people don't want Goodman to start I don't want Toma to start. If he is, we are in trouble. Every Championship team may have a guy or two like Toma, but none START guys like Toma.
Well said. With this depth chart, Toma plays a key role.
I may not be pretty, but I'm fast.....
