Ok, time to get all serious. What happens with Gunner? Don't tell me that Mr. All-World QB sits on the bench for another year. And if he's sitting on the bench this year, barring an injury from EG, he's also sitting on the bench in 2014. So - seriously - what happens? Something has to give.

move him to corner??? ILB??
Seriously, though, all you have to say to Gunner is "RGIII" because the truth is he is one play away from starting. Frightening for us fans, but it is the truth in this game. He is a vital piece of the puzzle next year.
Well, I think we can rule out transferring to LSU.
I think he has to see how it plays out next year. Not having seen him play a meaningful down of college football, it's hard to project how good he's going to be. If there's a huge gap between Golson and him, then he'll have a decision in front to make. If it gets close by the end of the year, then he will have a different perspective. And then there's always the chance of an injury. I'd like to think his focus will be totally on being at ND next year and trying to develop as much as he can. After next season, he will be in a better position to assess his future.
I may not be pretty, but I'm fast.....

Lets see in the Spring how good the kid actually is first.

Most likely, he will be the 2nd string QB next year. He played in the spring game last year, but it's hard to take anything out of that. Once we see him this year, we can get a grasp. I perceive Golson to possess the superior physical tools (arm strength and accuracy to be specific) but Gunner is bigger and supposed to be faster (in a straight line) than Golson. If Golson doesn't add on a few pounds he will remain susceptible to injury. If he avoids injury, I think Kiel will transfer before he plays a meaningful down at ND.
I think he's going to surprise a lot of people before it's all said and done. This is a good problem to have

I think he has the talent to be a great QB but I just don't think he sticks around at ND long enough to find out. It's the nature of the game. Barring injury it's the Everett Golson Show for the next 3 seasons imho. He's a talented QB that is going to want to play. I won't blame him for transferring. I just don't see him beating out Golson other than due to injury.
Ham is right, we haven't seen enough from this kid yet to say one way or the other how good he is, or can be. We also have not seen the best that EG can be, so we will all just have to speculate. I will go on record saying that all of you should remember the 49ers this year. They went to the NFC Championship game last year, Alex Smith was playing well for them, but Kaepernick brought things to the table that couldn't be denied, so a shocking switch was made. Golson is a very good player, led us to 12-0, has a fantastic arm, and quick feet...but he is also short, fumbles too frequently, and has yet to use the middle of the football field with any consistency. For all we know Gunner can run this offense better than EG and simply needs a year of seasoning and learning in order to get on the field. Or, Golson is on his way to becoming a Heisman candidate. The Spring game should be fun this year, and should give us a window into the progress Gunner has made during this year sitting on the bench. Either way, I don't think he transfers this year. I think he will give it one more season before determining his future. (Again, this is nothing more than a guess)
3 time POTW;
It depends how good he is this spring and fall practice. I do not see him leaving this year. If he improves enough he could be 2nd string and if he really comes on by the end of next season he might get some time. The fact is he could just a well not look good at all.
I think he stays. We have seen Golson get hurt and Rees coming in. Also I firmly believe if Gunner proves himself as the better QB Kelly will make the change in a heart beat. Nothing is given to these players even if they are starters. I don't think it's likely but I won't be shocked by any means if by week 6 Gunner is the starter. Gunner and Golson will def push each other with Rees pushing some himself.
EDIT no I don't think Golson is bad or anything, just Kelly plays who he thinks gives him the best shot to win. He's made that clear in both talking and doing so. This isn't a bad situation to have.

This isn't a math test, passion has a funny of trumping logic.
His first objective is going to have to be to move ahead of Tommy Rees for the No. 2 spot this spring. On paper and physical skill sets, that might sound like not a big issue, but the staff has great trust in Rees, as evidenced by his work this past season.
If Rees is advertised as the greatest No. 3 QB in the country at the end of spring — a la Evan Sharpley in 2009 behind five-star players Jimmy Clausen and Dayne Crist — then possibly Kiel might see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel and see how it plays out this fall. If not, then my opinion is a transfer is inevitable (there have been about two-dozen by Irish QBs since 1977. It's part of the game.)
I agree Lou, if he moves up to at least Number 2 QB he stays. If not i think he leaves.
Two time Poster of The Week, 2011 and 2013.
P.S. How easy is it to say Lou's accurate and I agree with him? Pretty darn easy.
Excellent points Lou. QB is that one position where this happens most frequently just because of the #'s. It's nothing personal and these kids just want an opportunity at that position and once the writing is on the wall that a player is entrenched at the QB position it's in the other player's best interest to look elsewhere especially when there is only a year between players.
He gets a bigger chest from Dr. 90210?
He moves up to #2, in fact that's a done deal, and then if/when he gets his shot he will be on a short leash assuming we're in NC contention.
