How many posters/posers/fans truly understand what the term "upside" means. I read too many post about how enamored people are about a kids 40yd dash time, how much they bench. It has been proven, time and time again that workout warriors dont always translate into "good football players" at the next level. A workout warrior can dominate on the high school level but will not dominate on the collegiate level due to the different variables in play. You cant run over , or run by , or run around everyone in college. You have to have more , u have to work at all the elements that would make one self a "good football player" Does physical prowess accelerate that growth? Absolutely, but smarts and heart are what truly seperate a good/great football player. Not their 40 yd time or bench press. Try looking a little deeper into a players profile before becoming their #1 fan , its really annoying and it takes away from the validity of the this site.
Well as outsiders looking in some of the only things we have to talk about are the 40 times, and bench presses etc....I agree that those are just benchmarks and there is a HUGE difference between track speed and football speed and weight room strong vs BULL strong!
I played with a kid in high school who was 6'4" and over 300lbs. His bench press was laughable, but no one wanted to get in his way on the football field.
Sitting here on our computers, there is no way for us to guage a players heart and desire....but putting up great numbers in a combine gives us something to chew on.
LET'S GET IT ON!!!!!
Talking about Braden Smith I assume?

It's also important to consider that technique, work ethic, and football IQ also goes into a player's effectiveness on the football field, as well as into their recruiting process. Given Coach Kelly's track record of developing players, developing work ethic in his team, and the amazing "RKG" character of most of the guys he has recruited, I see an ND offer now as evidence of a lot of these intangibles in the recruiting process.
SO, if a kid has great measurables and an ND offer, I'm usually pretty sold that the kid at the very least has good "upside" -- case in point being Corey Robinson, for example. Time will tell who makes it on the depth chart, but I have no problem signing 3* kids with the athleticism, body type, and character of CR, James Onwualu, etc.
I think the OP is simplifying it a bit by suggesting that all anyone does who mentions upside is looking at measurables on these sites -- half of them (height, 40 time) are embellished greatly anyway.

And when Navy beat Notre Dame 3 out of 4 years in there, did they have faster, stronger athletes?
Did we lose to Alabama just because they were so much faster/stronger? It sure looked that way, but read Barrett Jones' quotes about line play and you will see that scheme, football IQ, play recognition, scheme execution, and other aspects of football IQ are what make big plays happen.
Tommy Rees didn't have to be Vince Young to whoop Miami in the Sun Bowl, either. Miami was in mental disarray.
The bottom line is that you need BOTH aspects to be very well developed in order to be a championship team. I believe Notre Dame is well on its way to developing both aspects, but to joke about IQ as unimportant and "just for the military academies" is itself quite laughable.
Upside = Potential
How this somehow "takes away from the validity of this site" doesn't make sense to me?
I don't have time to look a "little deeper into their profile" not even sure what that means? Never read an interview where a recruit admits to "being lazy in class" or "hates practice and authority". I assume if ND is willing to invest over a quarter-million bucks plus into their education, then they have already done that.
I look at vitals...If you have some reservoir of insight to all of these kids link us up.

So, bigmizzle, I expect you to fill in the gaps of knowledge in a players profile here, in order to make this site more valid?

Speed is something that can be improved upon, but it isn't something that is learned. You are either fast, or you are not.
