Joining a conference like the ACC has many advantages over being an independent. We get a complete across the board upgrade in all our other sports, stronger tie ins with bowls, ability to put together a better schedule, and probably a better situation in the new college football national championship playoffs. Television revenue for conferences is now as good as or better than ND's. The ACC plays in the big east coast cities that ND is particularly strong. The ACC also plays in much of the southeast, where ND has had some great recruiting success (Virginia, Carolinas, Florida). Also there are a number of schools with excellent academics and a good number of private schools in the ACC.
We like to say ND is a not a regional school and shouldn't be tied into a conference. The reason ND is not a regional school is because it is the premier Catholic University in the world. A conference tie in would not effect that.
I really don't see any major advantage to remaining independent. It seems to be that the old guard needs to let go of the old ways. Change with the times or you will wake up and find out that the world has left you behind!!-
I believe one reason would be that ND wouldn't be able to play around the country like they do now. I'm sure they would use non-conference games to go West, but it wouldn't be the same. I do agree with most of what you said though.

Good point about playing around the country. I believe the ACC gives ND good exposure in major markets, but it will be a difficult tp play aroudn the country. Assuming ND Is required to play 7 or 8 conference games and ND keeps Navy and USC, there is probably only room for 2 or 3 more opponents from among Purdue, Michigan, Michigan State, Stanford. Plus ND would still like to retain the ability to take on the occassional Texas or Oklahoma, Defintely less flexibility in this if they join a conference. Still overall I think that joining a conference is a plus.
BTW my preference is 1) ACC 2) Big 10 Definitely not in favor of Big East or Big 12. Just not enough attractive matchups.

More dinosaur thinking by Notre Dame. If ND has joined the Big east, for example, in Football many years ago, they could have established their terms, kept their TV contracts, had multiple more BCS appearances, chances are they would have won at least one, helped shape the Big east even further, and the Big East would not likely be crumbling today. May have even made more money.
By ND not focusing its efforts on winning and creating ridiculous schedules at the mercy of Big 10 whims and USC fear of cold weather, and silly boondoggles in Ireland they are just spending money from a bank account opened by Knute Rockne.
But Oh no! We can't join a conference! We're Notre Dame! What garbage.
The main value of being an Independent is having a separate vote at the BCS table. Giving that away would be tough. The Conferences are enablers by keeping ND at the table. Obviously it is in their best interest having ND as an independent if the alternative is them joining a conference not their own. Meanwhile, ND's value keeps shrinking because the team stinks. The conferences can live with that.
