I gotta agree with Beeds here and Fitzi. I've been waiting for this topic to come up for a while now and its pretty clear that Wood is far more dominant inside the tackles and powers his way through in short yardage situations way more than Riddick. A good example is when ND had a 3rd down and Goal with 30 or so seconds remaining in the 4th quarter in the Stanford game and got stuffed quickly when he ran inside...if it were Cierre the game would have been won in regulation with a touchdown and the game would not have gone to OVERTIME!
Wood even throw a stiff arm on corners when running outside..have you ever seen Riddick do that? I rest my case.
Fair enough to those that differ. You've gone on record as have I. Let it further state that Lou S has Theo tied for third on MVP with Eifert. And BK 'tells' us how he feels on gameday. And I guess Im glad he sees it that way. But I state very unemotionally that time will tell. I hope Cierre breaks a few biggies off at some point, namely this weekend or in Norman or LA.
Kelly moving Riddick to Slot showed who he thought was the better back. IMO
I think cierre and George should split carries, i feel they are better runners than theo, theo is a great talent to have on our team but can better in another position or limit his carries and give ga more and wood way more
I agree that Riddick is a better receiver but Woods is by far the better runner. Play theo on passing downs but Woods needs to carry the ball.
If we can't run the ball on a consistent basis we have no shot in Norman or LA because we won't beat anyone throwing the ball. We have to be able to run to take pressure off of EG
Not close at all. I'd argue that Cierre Wood has better vision, patience and feet than any running back at Notre Dame over the last 15 years, maybe since Reggie Brooks.
Too much is made of the QB controversy. I think Riddick getting more work is the only real personnel oversight on the offensive side of the football.
I agree. That doghouse must have an awfully tight door to squeeze out of. The talent comparison is not even close.
My luck w/the Irish 20-6...GO IRISH!!!
If you give Cierre the same amount of touches that Riddick has had this year, he'd be at least #3 on the team MVP list too. Riddick is in on 65% of the offensive plays and gets the ball quite a bit.
Cierre has clearly been the best back on the team, and it isn't even close.
I recognize that it is CLOSE for inside outside running ability, but wont concede anything along the lines of landslide. And seeing that 3/4 of our big run plays are by GAIII(the other 1 being Wood vs Miami), I will concede that Cierre does have bigger run capability over Theo, but I guess I dont feel the risk/reward calculation supports the other side's claim. Wood has coughed it up a time or few, Riddick hasnt. Ever.
But, Im not sure some of you give much concern to the other responsibilities of the position(shifting to slot to run routes and pass blocking). Listen to BKs PC from today when asked about that. Personell groupings, the opponent, and increasing your skills within those responsibilities as it relates to the play. These are HIS words, not mine. Frankly, I am just glad he has used Theo in clutch situations as I see Theo's value in ANY GIVEN play to average out higher than Wood. Im NOT saying that Wood doesnt have value. He runs certain plays better in fact. But his entrance to the game sends a message to the defense ("he's not in there to pass block guys...check run first... and if it IS a pass, run through his shoulder, take the .5 second pause and grab #5") whereas Theo's presence makes it a total crapshoot as to what he'll do.
Put simply, Theo is just more versatile.
Ask your self this question(s): If Theo goes down injured at any point vs the Cardinal, do we win? Now insert Wood's name in there, is the same true or no?
Pretty sure Riddick fumbled twice in last year's opener against USF, and lost one of them, off the top of my head. Fumbled against Purdue, but didn't lose it. Wood and Riddick have the same number of fumbles this season, and neither has lost one.
Not sure where such a definitive statement comes from, but it's inaccurate.
Well there you go....
As you stated, he didnt lose the fumble against Purdue. And althoug I dont remember the play in question, I will offer that if we are being literal here, maybe I should have inserted the word BARELY in front of EVER.
As for USF, those were punt returns that he dropped. 1) Not what we are am talking about here(fumbles after handoffs or catches) and 2) never once did I lobby for him to be reinserted as a returner.
Look at Wood's fumbles per carry and then Riddick's Sir. I'd be willing to bet that it's lower than Wood's. Ask yourself: Would you be willing to bet? (not being literal here as in a challenge to wager $ with me)
Speaking of questions, Im still waiting on an answer about whether or not we win vs Stanford if Riddick is hurt at ANY point(you can even go up to the last Off play from scrimmage, the slant to TJ, where Riddick stones Thomas or Murphy on the weakside). And if the reverse is true about Wood.
Edits: added the parentheses to make sure you dont take it the wrong way... and misworded it and edited again

All one has to do is forget all this extra stuff like blocking ability, pass catching ability, ball security, etc. etc. etc. ... And just look at: 3.8 ypc vs. 5.9 ypc. That's it. It is an absolutely massive difference.
Our offense moves the chains like crazy when Cierre is in the game. With Riddick we end most of our drives with punts.
What will always stand out to me about Theo--no offense to him because I love him--is that he is the consummate "almost broke that one!" back. The image is burned into my mind because it's happened so often: 20 yards of nothing but green in front of him; clear path to the endzone; only one man to beat!!!; ...down on the ground as soon as the would-be missed tackle brushed him lightly below the waist. And then of course jump up, slap the ball with both hands and scream as if the defense was lucky--he "almost broke that one!!"
Just watch for that next game if you haven't noticed it yet. It's his signature run.
I do scratch my head at the lack of carries for Wood (That 2.1 yard per carry difference is big) in a game like we just had, BUT, that 6-0 ledger leads me to believe that I don't know

^^^ this^^^ Riddick dances way too much. I wasn't happy with play calling against Stanford when we played for the tie. I understood it though, what I didn't understand was why Riddick is getting that carry instead of Wood. We need 2 yards for TD Wood is getting that carry..
