5 Time POTW--Gringo Mafia Director of Guerrilla Warfare
I'm on board with this..
Gringo Mafia Director of Recruiting Analysis // POTW --> 5-16-11 / 5-30-11 / 3-5-12 / 12-30-12 / 2-24-13 / 9-1-13 / 9-22-13
I have read this thread a couple times and I am really struggling with it. I hear and have read many saying that 8 wins is logical or a little "rosy" thinking for this year, some on this board that I really respect reading your posts. So on that, 9 wins sounds great. But my struggle is going into a season saying "I know we are going to lose 3+ games". I hate that mindset. (Although I understand the logic in it.)
I am not predicting a win total, gave that up a couple years ago, I am terrible at it. Each week I just watch to see my Irish win. Win this Saturday, how's that for coach speak.
I want to watch an improved team on the field, with better qb play, and clutch performances across the board. (No more 5 rushing yard games verse a big rival in a huge night game. Or watching the secondary give up huge plays that just kill the team and us fans.)
Cop out answer I am sure, but that truly is my want for this season.

9-3 and a convincing bowl win would work for alot of us. 17 yrs of mediocrity will do that to you.......
Run the ball.
Stop the run.
You win, or lose, up front.

CITY OF CHAMPYINZ!!!!!!
Absolutely!!! I say this because I have very little confidence that we will win 8 games next season against this schedule with a first year QB under center. I think people are setting themselves up to be disappointed once again by believing we will win 8 games. JMHO.
3 time POTW;
If we also win the bowl game, then absolutely!
Absolutely NOT!! We can win more.

Good responses, with an almost 2-to-1 leaning toward signing up for 9-3. Just wanted to kind of feel the pulse.
Usually, after ending a season the way ND did last year and taking some hits in various areas, the January pulse is about "lucky to be 6-6," at the end of recruiting and spring it goes up to about 8-4, and usually right before the start of pre-season it starts edging into the double-digit column again. That's why I thought 9-3 would be an interesting gauge.
Lou, I have decided that you are not only the master of ND knowledge, but also a master at mind games. You do a great job eliciting responses and getting conversations going.
With this schedule? Absolutely.
By the way we haven't gone 9-3 since 2006-2007 season. That's 6 years. And this is the best schedule we have faced in that time, so yeah, I'd take that in a heartbeat.
I hope for better, but if you could guarantee 9-3 you would have to take it. At least it would be a step in the right direction for the program.
With big question marks at QB and in the secondary, i'd take 9-3 in a second. I hope that Golson takes the starting job this fall and leads us on a good campaign, we will have to live with QB growing pains and that means losing games, but it sets us up to be more successful next year and in the years to come. So yes you do it.
As a competitor. I cannot concede any losses. It would be like kissing your sister.

More like an insanely hot stepsister
You're very kind. I'm merely trying to do what I'm supposed to do. That's why one of my pet peeves in sports is "incentive clauses" in contracts, where if a player meets a certain weight, he receives a bonus, or if a coach wins a certain amount of games, he gets a bonus.
Lou Holtz said that in his first year at NC State, the Wolfpack went 8-3-1, won the Peach Bowl and had their first winning season in something like 5 years, and going 3-8 both the previous two years. When he went to the AD to ask for a $2,000 raise for himself and the staff, he pointed out all those positives.
The AD paused for a moment and said, "That's what I hired you for. The last coach didn't do that, which is why I fired him." Holtz said it was a great learning moment.
Like Coach CFT, though, I just couldn't take the cash in hand and am more curious about what's behind the curtain.
