Cooley, Grant make All-Big East squads

  • Notre Dame senior forward Jack Cooley was the only Big East player to average double figures in both scoring and rebounding during the 2012-13 campaign, and he was honored for his efforts Sunday by making the All-Big East First Team. Junior guard Jerian Grant was a third-team selection.

The duo was selected by a vote of the league's 16 head coaches who were not permitted to vote for their own players. Cooley was named as the league's most improved player last season and was selected to the second team. Grant played his way to all-rookie team honors in 2011-12. It is the 13th consecutive year that Notre Dame has boasted an all-conference selection.

Cooley started all 31 games for the Irish and leads the team in both scoring and rebounding with 13.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game. He led the league with 19 double-doubles, including 10 in conference play.

Grant is averaging 13.4 points this season and paced the Fighting Irish during the conference regular season with 14.2 points per game. He reached double figures 25 times and ranks fifth in the Big East in assists with 5.68 per game and was second in league play with 5.94 per game.

  • I think they got it right, but if they had put Dieng ahead of Cooley on the first team, I probably wouldn't have argued.

Agreed, that's a pretty tough call.

  • Congrats to both of them.

  • It is shocking that the coaches, who should know better, missed Eric Atkins. If there are three better point guards in the Big East, I missed them.

    nstalter

  • Atkins is a nice PG but lacks overall athleticism and makes poor decisions with the ball in crunch time. Dont get me wrong, I like him a lot, but not 1st or 2nd team, IMO. Next years squad is lookin solid:

PG: Atkins , with Jackson as a Freshman coming in to learn behind him.
    SG: Grant
SF: Biedshceid - needs to add bulk and play more and talk less
    PF: Auguste
    C: Shermanator

Connaughton first off bench. We are really lean outside of Pat; good thing we have 4 guys coming in. Any word on any possible transfers coming in????

Knight back for a 5th year. Also guarantee Connoughton starts next year, Brey is nothing if not a creature of habit.

  • Don't see August and Sherman on the court at the same time often. Both are low post, back to the basket kind of guys.

    Scottfan34

  • I did not know Knight had another year, that is GREAT news. He will get better!! You think Connaughton starts over Grant???

    phi_sig23

  • Connaughton will probably start, but I could see Biedscheid taking his place eventually if Connaughton doesn't take a giant step forward in his third season.

It's a little early on the transfer front. That's something that heats up in the first couple weeks after the season ends. Brey is always open to one if it's the right fit. An underwhelming crop of 2014 big men nationally might mean ND uses two of its three scholarships and accepts a transfer. The numbers always have a way of changing, however, like when Alex Dragicevich left last year for Boston College. Not saying I think anyone will transfer away from ND, but there are always surprises, like Joey Brooks sitting out this season.

    Wes Morgan

  • Wes, if you had to guess (and I know its a guess), who would you think would be our starting 5 of there were no surprises??

    phi_sig23

  • First of all, congrats to Cooley and Grant.

Looking ahead, I think the starting lineup will be Atkins, Grant, Connaughton, Knight and Sherman. Beidscheid could displace Connaughton, but he's got to show more consistency at both ends of the floor. Connaughton actually has a better field goal percentage (2-point) and they're even from beyond the arc. He's just a headier player right now, but Beidscheid has more upside. Auguste is your energy guy coming off the bench. He might wind up with as many, or more, minutes than either of the starting big men.
