Why not? In two years they could be competing against each other. I guess a good topic is who are you more excited about. Both these guys are straight athletic. The one thing I loved about watching EG's film was he was a pass first, and even after the pocket collapsed, he would scramble until someone got opened. He reminded me of Vick his first year with Philly.

I haven't watched much ok ZM, but I did like what I saw. He has been critized a little about his arm, but I did not see that in what I watched.

I think the important thing is that BK is bringing guys in who fit the system. EG, ZM and even Kiel are capable of running the spread the way it should be run, something Rees lacked and what AH was not brought in for, though he may be capable of doing it.

  • It's the slow-time. These are things talked about now. He is a committ. It's not like he is comparing jaylon smith to teo. This guy could very well be the leader of this team I. 2-3 years

  • It's a stupid thread. 6 months ago it was the same thing about Kiel. Now he is out of the picture?

If there is anything ND fans should've learned after this offseason, it is that there is 0 reason to get excited about a verbal committ. I remember when Tee Sheppard and Darby threads were a plenty as the best secondary ND will have ever had. How is that workin out?

There's just no reason to discuss something like this. Golson, while most of us are high and hopeful on him, hasn't taken a snap. He could fall flat on his face. Zaire isn't even a Senior in high school yet.

I get it's the offseason and you're excited about the potential recruiting class but its threads like these where it turns into "expert" opinions out of posters that blow up into silly arguments and meaningless debates.

It's just a dumb question. I'm sorry for being a jerk but there is just no purpose to this thread how it was headlined. If you want to ask who people want to see as qb, go read any other thread it comes up in. If you want to compare this kid Zaire to someone, lets at least have it be someone who has taken a snap.

First of all it's a hypothetical question. I've addressed the fact that Zaire is only a verbal commit, and nowhere am I asking people to compare the two in any sense of being proven on the football field. All I did was simply ask, given the hype these two have been given, along with Kiel, who they would rather see as QB. It's nowhere near "expert" opinions that i was seeking. But all three are highly regarded athletes. As for Darby and Shepard, they hadn't even signed letters yet. 2 of the 3 QBs I mentioned are enrolled and the 3rd will shock the hell out of me if he does decommit. If you would like to talk about what you call relevant threads, then instead of wasting time calling mine stupid and downvoting me, then why don't you get off your ass and start one. I would love for you to dazzle us all with your insightful revelations in all things ND football. Go ahead my friend, I'm waiting.

  • I'm going with the guy who has already seen an ND playbook.

    I R I S H

  • I think it is an interesting question, especially this time of year.

But one appropriate response to an interesting question is to reframe it, ask it differently.

So I would ask, Why does Kelly want to recruit a QB each year? Why not every other year?

The very fact that Kelly wants to recruit a QB every year, and a good one at that, tells me that he has a need for one, and therefore a place for each.

What I am most interested in is Kelly and Martin knowing the identiy of their offense and being able to develop a starting and back up QB each year who can fully execute that offense, that offensive identity. Hendrix, Golson, Kiel, and Zaire all have that potential, making QB the strongest it has been in decades. I like that, and I am totally comfortable suspending judgment about who should start until I know a lot more.

For 2012, I expect Golson and Hendrix to compete and contribute. By 2013, I suspect that one of those two will be replaced by Kiel. But by 2013, the depth will be so great with so much quality that we will have to talk about some other position or some other issue this time of year. And that will be a good thing, will it not?

    65too

  • Assuming MZ dowe not flake we really do have a deep bench at QB. Golson, Kiel and Zaire are all studs and in 2 years will all be looking to lead the Irish to a championship. Add in Hendrix and Rees and for at least 2013 you will have 5 scholarship players at QB ( although I suspect one of them would end up transferring).

The real question in my mind will be GK and EG. If EG does what I think he will this year, it will be hard to replace him with GK in 2013. And if either EG or GK is lighting it up it will be hard to see MZ getting on the field until 2016. But such is big time college football and if these kids went anywhere else they'd be facing the same prospect of either playing behind a more senior QB or fighting off stud recruitss more junior to them.

  • Sorry bud. Your thread says Zaire or Golson. Then you mention "love for both of these guys" and "who plays". I'm not sure where you're from, but "both", to me at least, implies two things. Not three. You casually mentioned not to "forget" about Kiel and only now do you want to throw him into the conversation because you want to defend your case for the useless thread. As if anyone following ND, especially as in depth as the recruiting aspect, would have forgotten about him.

Hypothetical or not, it's really a pointless debate you wanted to create because of the fact that neither have taken a snap at ND and one hasn't taken a snap as a Senior in HS. Nor has he "signed the letter of intent" like you pointed out about Darby and Sheppard. However, just to clarify for you, Sheppard did. And Sheppard enrolled early. He still isn't with ND.

I'm all for recruiting. I think it is an exciting part of college football. However, I think how main stream it has become and how it forces conversations like this, is just silly. Great question in a year or two, maybe. Right now? Please.

Like I said. Sorry for being a jerk. It just needed to be said.

I just got done speaking to Lou and JSapp. They assured me that if you dont like a post, you are not required by Federal or State law to respond to the post, nor will you be banned from this site or the University of Notre Dame campus. They said there will be no repercussions if you don't post or if you don't even open the thread.

    Ya I know, shocking.

  • I saw an College Football Countdown and they did a break down and interview with Zaire, and he looked like a really good prospect; smart, driven, and athletic. I feel bad for whoever doesn't get the job because we have a stable of elite quarterbacks right now. If Kelly can't get it done with Zaire, Golson, Kiel, or Hendrix, he needs to be canned.

  • Kiel. And then next year when Zaire is here, still Kiel. Rees will transfer. Then once Kiel is two year starter and Zaire is the heir apparent, EG transfers.

So to answer your question, Zaire in 2016.

  • Certainly a premature thread, but not a terrible one. The big thing it underscores is how quick and fickle recruiting can be for fans and teams alike. It's a non-issue now, but if Golson struggles or still can't capture the starting job this fall fans will quickly dive into Kiel/Zaire debates will full force. Likewise with Zaire getting elite 11 status and hype going into the fall the inevitable "will he stick with ND" chatter will be upcoming. Every positive step forward by Golson will be used to recruit Zaire away from ND saying he'd have to sit behind EG.
The need to sign a top QB every year never makes sense until it is needed. Just a few years ago nd went from Clausen, Jones, Frazer, Sharpley to Clausen, Crist to Crist, Rees, Montana, Hendrix then Golson. A strong battle turned into throwing a FR into the fire. Then being stacked with 5 star studs and set for 7 years led to few wins, Clausen leaving early and a recovering Crist with nothing behind him ready.

Now we have an "embarrassment of riches" of studs that haven't beaten out everyone's least favorite QB or are still in HS.
