Did I underrate Golson's Spring Game

  • He did some nice things but I did not come away from that game thinking he was the clear favorite.

To be fair I did hope it would be him before the Blue/Gold game and thought it would be him for the 2012 season after the bowl game and thinking about the two QBs that played in bowl game.

I don’t think he hurt himself in the QB battle but really did not come away overly impressed, I think once he gets the consistency down he could be a nice player in the Kelly’s spread. Who knows what will happen with Rees, the kid seemed to be the favorite with the team given his IQ of the offense and really if he doesn’t turn it over as much this season I’m fine with him doing it but again that means another season of not seeing Brian Kelly run his true spread offense. I would much rather see a Hendrix/Golson combo and have two true spread QBs doing it then a Rees/Hendrix or Rees/ Golson combo.

If ND is to turn the corner & get over the hump Golson is the guy.

120% agree. I think he was the best of the 4... but that isn't saying too much. I think it was a fairly poor outing by the 3 main guys, but Golson should win that particular game by default.

  • I think his play was underrated .I was not looking for a star performance ,but saw some things that people may have overlooked. The snap the center dropped on the ground,,Golson quickly and calmly picked up and ran for a couple yards.I seem to remember those kind of plays turning into keystone cop 90 yard tds for the other team.the last couple years. He also made some quick check downs to open receivers for 7 to 9 yard gains instead of forcing throws into coverage. He is an accurate thrower good runner and has a calm demeanor on the field.I like him a lot.I am not saying he is a finished product ,but I was impressed with him.

  • For a redshirt Freshman, who did little more than run the scout team offense last year, I thought it was a pretty impressive performance. Obviously, he's very much a work in progress, but we weren't looking at a guy who had been apprenticing a couple of years. If he's they guy taking the snaps next year, we're going to have to be very patient, but I think there's a lot of raw material with plenty of upside.

  • Was he great? No, I wouldn't say great. However, he was much better than the others.

  • I think he played great. High completion %, 2TD's and 0 INT's. He also made sone nice plays with his feet. If that's not great, what is?

    NDShepard

  • What exactly would you like to see him do? No turnovers. Check. Make defense pay with his feet. Check. Show off arm strength. Check. Show off accuracy. Check. He put up really good numbers and easily passed the eye test, yet you left unimpressed? Basically if you are the coach, you'd send out Tommy Rees unless Golson puts on a Michael Vick-esque performance . Tommy has the playbook memorized, a "high IQ for the offense", is a 16 game starter, and looked completely awful. Golson looked better relative to the other QBs and relative to expectations. I am not in the huddle nor know the plays, so he may still be slow in that regard, but the kid looks like the best of the bunch at the moment.

  • Kelly's only complaints about Golson was he has trouble getting the plays in on time. I'd say Golson gets the job this fall.

Seriously, you watched Rees last year and in the spring game and you wonder what Golson did to be the clear favorite, anything he did would be better that TR, the future is Golson and he needs to play and learn on the fly, no way he should sit behind Rees. Kelly's infatuation with Tommy needs to end and TR might have paved the way himself. IMO this football team has very little upside with Rees being the number one.

No not really, I was referring more to a Bruce Feldman article on Spring Football Surprises that had Golson number 9.

Agree with you on the 0 upside with Rees other than maybe operating an offense that stalls in the red zone and turns the ball over. I want Golson to be the guy but didnt leave the spring game thinking wow theres the guy.

I was impressed with his performance - showed good mobility - was able to extend plays - has good speed especially on a few o/s runs - very nice zip on his throws which were for the most part accurate. Work in progress - yes but I'll take what I saw as a very nice starting point. Maybe he didn't 'WOW' us but I'm excited with what I saw. GO IRISH!
