ESPN's Schlabach provides sanity relative to ND relevance

  • Nice counter to what's his name's drivel from earlier this week.

College football -- Notre Dame Fighting Irish still resonate around the world - ESPN

Notre Dame might not be the heavyweight of yesteryear, but the Fighting Irish still matter to a majority of people.

It was a good article because it was balanced and stated what everyone
on this board, as well as the staff, have been saying for quite a few
years, i.e. we all love ND and its football team but, my God people, let's
win! And, if we lose, let's not lose at home and let's not lose to teams that
are, frankly, not on our talent level. If we lose this year to Oklahoma in a
closely-fought contest, its o.k. Will I sleep that night--probably not but, it
beats losing to Connecticut, Syracuse, Tulsa etc.

That having been said, one of the more interesting aspects of these endless
"relevance" articles is the difference in coverage between ND and, let's
say, Michigan. In its "long and storied" history, precisely how many AP
national championships has Michigan won? I believe a grand total of
2! That's right, since 1936, a period of 75 years, Michigan has won
two national championships. Does that make Meechigan irrelevant?

This entire topic is slightly irritating, Schlabach's article notwithstanding.
    From 1979 until 2002, a period of 23 years, USC was a nothing---did that
    make them irrelevant?

It is consoling, however, that to begin the 2012 football season, ESPN's
writers have written over 4,000 words on an irrelevancy. Good Lord,
what will they do when we start winning big?

  • A well done article. My one disagreement is to say ND hasn't won a BCS-level game since the 1992 Sugar Bowl.

The Cotton Bowl was still one of the five "major" bowls (along with Orange, Sugar, Rose and Fiesta) back in 1992 when ND defeated 12-0 and No. 4 Texas A&M (28-3), and in 1993 too — 24-21 against a 10-1 and No. 7 Aggies team. Throughout most of its history, the Cotton was recognized since with the Cotton, Sugar and Rose as one of the four "majors." The Fiesta didn't start getting that status until the early 1980s.

The BCS started in 1998, but in the early 1990s, the Cotton Bowl was still a BCS-level bowl, and that shouldn't be forgotten. Even in Notre Dame's Football Auditorium, there is a section that highlights ND's BCS history and excludes the Cotton Bowl — while including the Rose from 1925, or Orange from 1972 and Sugar from 1973.

Yes, I understand the Cotton isn't part of the current BCS, but it then should not highlight the pre-BCS Sugar and Orange and Rose bowls, or even Fiesta in 1989, while excluding some of the most storied victories in ND history in the Cotton, including wins over No. 1 Texas in 1971 (24-11) and 1978 (38-10), and the unbelievable comeback against Houston (35-34) in 1979.

Agreed Lou, we played in multiple National Championship games in the Cotton Bowl in the 1970s. For tradition's sake, I'm hoping Jack works out some kind of additional tie in back to the Cotton Bowl in the upcoming bowl contracts.

Nevertheless, the Cotton is about to make a BIG splash back into the 5 major bowl game rotation. With Jerry Jones $ and venue now backing the game it will either host the new SEC/B12 champions bowl game or become one of the rotating National Championship games in the new playoff format.
