Everett Golson

  • This is my first post, but after watching the spring game I had to post something. I feel that Golson by far showed the most improvement. On Goal Line on ESPN, both announcers praised Golson saying that he basically made extremely smart reads and kept plays going when needed to. I feel by the time ND plays Navy, we will see Golson as our starting QB. He simply makes plays! His potential is by far unlimited and he is only a redshirt freshman. I feel something extremely special when I watch him play! Mayock also kept praising the velocity on Golson's throws, He can make any throw and he is very athletically talented. Any other thoughts?

    Go Irish!

  • I don't care what practice is like, this kid can play and Tommy can't. He deserves his shot.

  • He made some really good throws and got better and better. Both TD passes showed perfect timing. VERY encouraging!

    TrueND

  • He may make some mistakes but he gives us the best chance to WIN. Coach Kelly has to see this and I hope he is just waiting for the right moment to give him the nod.

  • The Golson era need's to be given the green light imo.

  • One thing for sure Rees hasn't improved!

  • I am not at practice everyday to really see and know what the answer is to ND's QB problems. But, I do know I have lost confidence in TR.

Co-sign. It is the difference between watching an experienced JV player (TR) and a varsity freshman (EG). Talent makes up for a lot, so give Golson the reps and get this team ready for that schedule.

  • If you listened to Bk when they asked about Golson he played him down about putting the ball on the ground? Guy is setting you all up for the Rees era to continue... although I think Golson is very good and looks much more the leader... and trust me with this offense will need his legs to get out of trouble...

Best QB today was Hendrix... Best QB on the team far as talent Keil but he probably will be red shirted...

Look for BK to mess this up and go with Rees... should be Golson or Hendrix without even a discussion...

Kelly will be critical of all ND players. It is his job to coach them up, and fix their short comings. Not sure where you saw Hendrix as the "Best QB today"? I do agree that Kiel could be a monster talent wise! thumbsup2

  • Golson was clearly ahead of his QB counterparts. He looks like a natural at the position.

  • dpoore12- Best QB today was Hendrix?? Did we watch different games?

Dan are you serious or just being sarcastic? EG was head and shoulders above the other two QBs. 11-15, 120yds 2TDs( should have been three if Daniels finishes) and NO INTs!!!

I think BK downplayed Golson because there is no advantage to name him a starter right now..

  • I know we have to take the spring game with a grain of salt, but he looked much better than the other quarterbacks. Tommy and Andrew seemed to lock on to receivers which resulted in interceptions. Those picks were terrible reads. Im not saying Golson is perfect. He is far from it, but he is much more dynamic than the others. Like Brian Kelly said, the quarterbacks need to take the voluntary workouts serious. With the performance that Golson had, I feel he will certainly take advantage it or at least I hope so.

  • I think Kelly down played Golson because he does have work to do and he wants him to keep up the development work. He does make mistakes managing the clock, subs etc. Those are fixable but Kelly insists on details being executed as well. You could hear the disgust in Kelly's tone when talking about Rees's INTs and Hendrix', 'seen that movie before'. Golson took the most snaps and didn't have ANY of the INTs. I think the only way that Golson can gain confidence and be composed enough to check the details is by playing. The first 2 games: Navy and Purdue, are perfect for a new QB to make his bones. Hendrix has more upside than Rees, is a very good runner, and could be outstanding as well but he has to eliminate the stupid passes. BTW, his TD pass to Eifert should have been defended much better. Salvi gambled on breaking up the pass and missed by a mile.

  • We mentioned in our practice report of last Saturday's practice, which was the only full session open to the media, that Golson looked pretty good but infuriated Brian Kelly at times for being slow to get everyone on the same page and the ball snapped during a scrimmage. Obviously it was still an issue today, but once Golson figures that out he's going to be in good position to earn the starting job.

I agree with most of you that Rees' time should be over. You have to respect what Rees did as an underclassman thrown into the fire, but he doesn't have another level, simply isn't a running threat and has the weakest arm of the bunch. I'm not saying to hoist the white flag before the 2012 season even begins, but let's face it, with a brutal schedule and so many players to replace, it's a good year to experiment with Golson and Hendrix.

    Wes Morgan

  • Wes, I think if Golson starts and makes some bad, unsettling mistakes, you could still see Rees come in and try to calm things down. I don't think Kelly would send in another unproven QB to takeover for one who had just spit the bit. Same thing if Hendrix was the starter. I think you would want another week of practice before sending in your second inexperienced guy.

All good points, Wes. With this quarterback situation, there are going to be concerns in whichever direction you go. Golson's should be fixable with experience. Rees' won't, and Hendrix really does appear to have a blind spot in throwing directly into coverage. Golson definitely looked the best in extending the play. I agree with Psdo's comment that Kelly is going to be sparing with his praise until the mistakes get minimized.
