Further details in Rees arrest

  • At around 12:30 a.m. last night South Bend police were called to a house party at 716 N. Notre Dame Ave., according to Captain Philip Trent.

When the police arrived they heard sounds of the backyard fence breaking as people jumped over it. They went around to the backyard where they saw five males trying to flee. They approached the men and one reportedly yelled an obscenity at the officer. Rees ran around the house and back into the street where he was captured by one of the officers on the scene, he was the only person pursued and caught by police.

Rees kneed the arresting officer in the stomach, which led to resisting arrest and felony battery of an officer claims when he was booked. They continued to wrestle after both hit the ground and Rees was pepper sprayed. He continued to struggle with police as they put him in the car, according to Trent.

Rees had a blood alcohol content level of 0.11 when he was arrested.

Calabrese, who had a BAC level of 0.12, was one of many bystanders at the party when Rees was arrested in the street. He confronted the officers asking if they hated Notre Dame and Trent said he threatened them saying, "My people will get you."

Rees will not be formerly arraigned on the four charges until 1 p.m. today at the earliest. If the courthouse does not receive an official report until after that point, he will have to remain in jail until tomorrow. By law police have 48 hours to press charges after an arrest.

  • Wow. This story keeps getting worse. I can't see how Carlo and Tommy don't get suspended now. It was one thing for Floyd to get busted for underage drinking, but we are talking assaulting and threatening police in this instance. I hope Tommy and Carlo are given an opportunity to get back into good graces by performing community service and whatever else the courts mandate, but they have to be suspended for multiple games this season.

  • If this is true, then I'll agree 100% with any punishment Rees should receive - including dismissal from the team. Battery can be slapping away a cop's hand or even brushing up against him. Kneeing a cop in the stomach and wrestling with him on the ground is a different matter.

And I'm not sure what Calabrese was thinking claiming, "My people will get you." That's dumb. His people couldn't beat South Florida.

  • Talked to a few neighbors who reported that it was the first party all year at that house. It was, according to them, "rocking." Lots of loud music. According to one man, whose wife saw the arrest, Rees put up a prolonged struggled when police caught up with him.

  • I'm not convinced Calabrese meant football players when he said "my people will get you."

Whether Carlo was referring to other football players or the mafia, it is irrelevant to me. He threatened a police officer and now he's going to have to pay the piper. I'm surprised Kelly hasn't had a heart attack already. It's hard enough to deal with the pressures of winning football games at ND let alone having to deal with the utter stupidity of players threatening and assaulting police.

  • I think when you say something like that its usually ppl more powerful than a football player.

Sounds more like Rees was on the ground and the cop fell on his knee, doesnt seem like Rees attacked the officer with a knee to the gut.

Cop got the wind knocked out of him, Rees struggled and when the cop falls and gets the wind knocked out why not throw assault charge. Yes Sir, No Sir goes a long way with police and acting a fool wont win you any favors.

Wouldnt be surprised if he is charged with lesser count. Still pretty stupid.

Dont think Carlo has much to worry about, Rees could get some time, dont think dismissal.

  • I gotta admit, that sounds worse than I was expecting.

That's too bad, Tommy seemed like a real good kid. I wanted Golson to be our QB, but not like this.

  • I have to admit, I had a similar incident that happened to me and my friends in high school, except I hopped a few fences with a cop doing the same but lost him with speed. If Tommy ran a 4.6 like me, he could have gotten away.

Hahaha my story is identical to yours except in college.

  • just more bad news for the program we don't need. It doesnt sound good for Tommy and if Carlo made a threat thats not good either.

  • Sounds like Carlo Calabrese had some drunken Italian pride and was alluding to possible connections to the mafia.

I can say this because I am ITALIAN and I have seen this from my own idiot friends who have absolutely no connection to the mob but run their mouths during fights like they are Sammy the Bull.

Rees will not appear in front of a judge today according to courthouse employee. Can be kept in custody until tomorrow.

I think we can all quickly recall the flagrant foul he got after taunting a player that he tackled...all while we were losing that game. So yeah I totally agree with you that his anger and agression got the better of him while drunk.

From what I've read all the others stopped when the police ordered them to. Tommy was the only one to keep running. Thus he was the only one to be pursued.

  • So far we have only heard from the police. I think the only thing we know is that there was a college party celebrating the end of the semester. Police showed up and Tommy ran probably becasue he is underage and the ND QB and got tangled up with a cop. The rest about the kneeing a cop is one side of the story. Would it surprise anyone if the cop was pissed he had to chase him and started the altercation and Rees was jsut trying to defend himself? I have plenty of friends and family who are cops so I dont want to come off anti-cop, but when cops write a report many will change the facts to make them come off clean.

Everything we know about Rees says he is a good, normal college kid. People I know who know him from school say he is a good guy. I don't think there is any reason to believe he would start fighting with a cop unless he was seriously provoked. Sure, he should have just taken his medicine and said yes sir, no sir, but I don't beileve he is totally guilty of anything but drinking and trying to get away from the cops, a crime 90% fo college students could be accused of.

I understand why Calabrese would ask the cops if they hate ND. The cops have a track record of harrassment in these situations. The cops went and turned what sounded like a peaceful, fun party into a crazy situation. If the cops were just asking for the music to be turned down, the kids would not be running away. It's a shame the way South Bend Police treat ND, when the school keeps the city afloat.

Also, enough of this crap about this solving the QB problem and he wasnt fast enough to run away. This kid is in very serious trouble. Possibly life changing. It would be nice if ND fans showed a little class and showed concern for one of its own.

That's what threw the cops off, they had never seen Tommy run that fast during an actual game. I hope a few MAC school coaches were out there with stopwatches so he can get a chance to play in 2013.

The NJ came out of Carlo last night.
