Game Watch in Rochester, New York?

  • Hey guys, so I will be interviewing for Anesthesia Residency at the University of Rochester on January 7th, and haven't been able to switch the date. Is anybody from Rochester, or going to be in town and up for a game watch?

On that note -- anybody have any connections in Anesthesia or thoughts on these residency programs/departments? I'm interviewing at Columbia, U Arizona in Tucson, Rochester, NYU, Georgetown, U Penn, Penn State Hershey, U Washington, U Cal San Diego, Einstein/Montefiore, and am wait-listed at Northwestern. Just a shot in the dark here..!
    cheers

    GO IRISH!

  • My paps is from Rochester ny so I'll ask him for you but you have to try a garbage plate from nic tahoes if you get a chance ( drunken sloppy gem ) so if you like a finer cuisine pls disregard.

As for the anesthesia, I just used my spell check to spell it correctly if that answers your question, sorry.
Good luck with the interview buddy!!! Go Irish!!!

  • Turtle, that's my back yard, but sadly, or happily, depending on your perspective (mine is the "happily"), I'll be in South Florida that night. Of course, I don't have a ticket yet, but I continue to believe there's one out there with my name on it, even if it sets me back quite a few Benjamins. The local bar which is HQ for ND fans on game days is a place called "Shamrock Jack's" which won't be very close to the university (maybe 20-25 minutes away). If you're staying near the university, the best sports bar nearby is a place called the Distillery. Chances are real good that you'll find more ND fans there, or at any bar, than Alabama fans.

As far as Anesthesia programs, I'm sorry but that stuff just puts me to sleep.

Yeah, I know, first time you ever heard that one. Seriously, I could barely spell it, let alone know anything about it, but the U. of R. in general, has a first rate med school. I know quite a few graduates, and some teaching practitioners there, and I have the utmost respect for all of them. Best of luck in your interview and ultimate decision. Sorry I won't be around to see you this time, but if that's where you wind up hanging your stethoscope, I'm sure we'll cross paths at some future date (though I'd prefer it not be professionally).

  • Ham and I are both from Rochester. So an advance welcome to our humble city! The best place in all of Rochester to watch the Irish is Shamrock Jack's, which is in the suburb of Irondequoit down by Lake Ontario. It gets packed there, however, and I'd suggest getting there early if you can. But it's a huge Irish bar. they play the fight song after every touchdown and you'd feel very much at home.

If that doesn't work for you, shoot me a PM and let me know where you'll be staying and I'll see if I can come up with something closer.

My luck with the Irish: 2-4, 3-time POTW

  • This is great stuff -- thanks for the info! I'll be staying at the East Avenue Inn, which is a bit of a ways from Shamrock Jack's. Is there good Taxi service in Rochester? I'm definitely willing to spend whatever it takes to get into a good environment for the biggest game of my ND fandom (fan since I visited ND as a HS Senior in 2002!).

    Go Irish!!

  • This thread is the perfect example of why this board is the best there is, way to take care of our own!

I can't believe there was no mention of garbage plate from all you up-state(ers)

  • I've given up garbage plates. They're delightful. But I've been trimming the old waist line quite a bit in the last year. For those of you who aren't familiar with this fine Rochester, NY culinary delight....here's the run down:

Your choice of two cheeseburgers or two hot dogs (bunless) served over your choice of any of these two sides: french fries, home fries, macaroni salad and baked beans. It is all served on a plate, covered in your choice of condiments: a ground beef style "hot" sauce (a must to have on a garbage plate), ketchup, mustard and onions.

It's a heart attack waiting to happen. But they are outstanding. Especially after a night spent tipping back a few cocktails.

My luck with the Irish: 2-4, 3-time POTW

Hemy....I just invited Turtle to a private party I've put together at an East Ave bar that night. Not sure of your age, but if you don't mind hanging with a bunch of 20 somethings who drink too much, you're welcome to join us. PM me for details.

And I just saw that Ham and I must have responded at the exact same time last night....great minds from great neighbors (who still haven't met, believe it or not).

Turtle, where you're staying, you can literally roll out of bed into a half dozen of the most popular bars and nightspots in town. I know at least one of them is an Irish themed (the country not the university) bar, and another has a strong sports bar orientation. I have no idea what they're like on a Monday night, but then again, this will be no ordinary Monday night.

nd..md, I purposely omitted reference to garbage plates, because I didn't think, coming from a pig, it would be received with the culinary respect it deserves. Gourmet dining at its finest.

Hemy, glad to hear you're a neighbor. You, NYDomer and I will have to make a point of getting together to discuss all things Irish.

Ham, if you see this, you're welcome as well.

Thanks, NYD. Our two posts obviously crossed in cyber space. I'd love to join you, but barring some unforeseen development, I'll be down in Miami that night. Great work in putting something together in that neighborhood. ND fans take care of their own. I'm sure you'll all have a great time.

  • NYDomer, Turtle, HOW,

Thanks for the invite. I am of "advancing" age---born in 1943, I don't
know weather I can take any more ND-Pitt games!!

Thank you for the invitation---as I said, I will have to see what's going
on with some other domers I roputinely watch games with but we must
plan to meet at some point, get to know each other, and rejoice
together that we cheer for the best program in America, bar none!!!!

    hemy

  • A victory garbage plate could quite possibly be the greatest experience known to domers... I hope yall finish off your night with the culinary delight that is the garbage plate
