Rockne's Roundtable

Every time I give a tour or field study at Gettysburg I stop by the Father Corby statue. The Irish Brigade at Gettysburg is an epic story to say the least. The fighting in the Wheatfield and southwestern Peach Orchard is truly fascinating.

What a wonderful history lesson, Lou!!! I never had the chance to attend my ND graduation in February, 1964. I enlisted immediately in the army for three years with the hope of putting my ND degree to work for my 3 year military commitment. I did. My final 16 months were spent on Okinawa as Chief Psychological Warfare Scriptwriter fot The Voice of United Nations Command. My 3 15 minute weekly scripts were translated into Mandarin, Cantonese & North Korean. I like to think that I helped screw up Mao's Cultural Revolution but that may be pushing the envelope a bit. :-)

Happy to say one of my younger brothers served as an Army ROTC instructor at ND from 1966-70. He had been a life time fan and the opportunity was given to him as he was winding down a 20 year career.

Your Happy Birthday article on Fr. Hesburgh (Leadership) and this one brough back some memories that are faded. Back in the late 60s and early 70s, ROTC programs were dropping like dominos. In one of Fr. Hesburgh's speechs to the student body he said something like: "If you don't like the way we do things here, there's the door." It would be great to have the exact quote.

Thanks Lou. Great article. I have a question. What was the name of the Notre Dame Grad that was a POW and suffered through the "Japanese Death March?" And the Japanese Officer who was a USC Grad. I know rhe Notre Dame soldier survived the war. I've often wondered if the Japanese Officer did.

I just saw the video and read the articles. That's two of the many reasons I became a ND fan as a young boy in Texas. And yes: I remember (and recognize) the Movietone Narrator's voice. God Bless all of you for your assistance.
