Golson Looks To Be QB Frontrunner

Five days into fall camp, sophomore Everett Golson appears to be leading QB derby.

    Wes Morgan

  • such a smart and tough young man..just hope he doesnt put to much pressure on himself when that dream becomes a reality Sept 1..

    Jeffery Hudgen

  • He thrives under pressure...he's used to it and won 2 state championships in South Carolina..he had 1,770 yards passing and 25 touchdowns while injured half of his senior season! I don't think we can say the same for Rees...

  • It is imperative this position gets figured out and is productive. No more talking about talent, etc. I want to see it on the field. We need production here at QB to be successful.

    First time POTW for 4/18/2011-4/24/2011.

    edd1066

  • His highlight film suggested he has natural gifts for the position that go beyond arm strength and foot speed. He appears to react well to the flow of the play. He looked like he was not so much forcing the play, as much as he was letting the play come to him. I really like the fact that he was a skilled point guard in high school. That's no guarantee of success, but it sure doesn't hurt.

    I may not be pretty, but I'm fast..... POTW 1/31/11 - 2/6/11

  • Barring a complete and utter offensive meltdown, it's starting to look more and more like Tommy Rees won't have another meaningful snap as the Notre Dame quarterback.

I could not agree more with edd1066.If BK.feels that Golson is his guy then lets name him the stater get Hendrix some snaps and get ready for the 2012 season.I feel that BK.waited to long to name his starter in 2011 lets get done and move on.

  • I think our offense has the ability to make a lot more big plays with Golson behind center this season. Obviously Floyd is gone, but it sounds like BK is looking to get guys like Riddick, Jones, Atkinson, Wood, and some of the Frosh a lotta touches in space. Since these guys won't be able to win battles at the line of scrimmage, Golson can buy himself time and allow these guys to shake loose further down field...

I look for our percentage on 3rd & shorts to be a lot higher now that we can develop more creative ways to get yardage other than the predictable 5 yard out to Eifert.

  • Gonna be some growing pains (delays of game, missed checks on blitzes), but the playmaking will far outweigh the mistakes

What has that got to do with anything? Let's focus on EG or whoever wins without cheering because TR is done.

You are the only one on this thread talking about TR, for God's sake its like Obama blaming George Bush. Whatever you think about George, he was and is a GOOD MAN! TR is too and will prove that as a solid back up giving support to whomever wins his job and will graduate a fine young ND man. .....and God forbid, if called upon through injury or whatever, he will be prepared to help.

  • He will run, he will pass, he will escape the first tackle. I hope Everett will, however, do what it takes to avoid the big hit. It is a matter of smart not a lack of toughness.

    FBFAN

  • Eyes down the field at all times with the ability to run. That is why RG3 was so good. He always had pass first in mind and waited until he absolutely had to to run unless the play was designed for him to. I'm pretty giddy about what this kid can do. Can't wait for Sept 1.

  • I am excited. go Golson. go Irish.

Just for the record, I don't think the President ever said that Bush was not a good man. :)

  • Staff,

How does Golson look size wise? My worry is injury. One thing I love about him is even though he is a great runner, he is a pass-first guy who will scramble until someone gets open. But I expect him to run and get hit by the big boys.

So staff, do you think he is built for the season?

    Easy, big fella.
Where in my post was I cheering that Rees was done?

The fact that Rees hasn't been getting 11 v 11 reps would lead me to believe he will be #3 on the depth chart. That seems like a tough mountain to climb considering his competition. At absolutely no point was I celebrating this.

  • Did you guys watch todays video of Golson where he runs forward about 5 yards and then backs up 5 yards and completes the pass? The mans instincts are remarkable. That play reminded me of some of his high school runs/passes.

That ability to freeze the LBs and safeties like that is so freakin' gamechanging.

  • I think we all are excited about EV starting but TR is still a ND man and he did his best to help the team and is still helping even thought he probably won't see the field again. Hopefully we'll see him do some mop up duty this year.

I was wondering the same thing. Is he still 185 or has he put on a few lbs?

  • Watching the kid in high school he displays confidence and the fans always knew he would get the job done. Let's hope he restores confidence in the minds of ND fans once again.
