Golson info

  • Hey staff, just wondering if you heard if Golson was able to add any weight thus far during the off season? I remember BK saying thats something he would have to do, just wondering of the results as of now? any updated weight?

  • We won't receive anything from Notre Dame until spring practice opens March 20, and even then I'm not sure if they will have any updated heights and weights.

With his frame, I have some doubts about whether Golson will ever be more than 200 pounds (Tony Rice was remarkably durable at 6-1, 200), but I could see him in the 190-195 pound range by August. That would seem to be a pretty good and reasonable progression.

  • Somebody get Golson some deer antler spray!

    Lou-

Do you really think Golson can approach 200 pounds? I've never seen him up close, but if my life depended on it I would estimate he weighed under 175 last season. Weighing 200 pounds at 5'10" (no chance he's over 6'0") is quite bulky. I think he'll have trouble ever getting over 185. Given his naturally small stature, durability is going to be an ongoing concern over his entire career. I think he played great last year and expect him to start three more years, but any fantasy around him nearing 200 pounds seems far-fetched. I'm not concerned either, as a 6'4" 235 pound QB is nice but not necessarily a requirement at the D1 level.

  • No, I should be clearer. I can't see him at 200. I don't doubt he was more in the 175-180 range last year, and I don't know if he will get more than 190. Growth spurts are hard to project. I think Kelly was speaking toward building "more armor" around Golson, not necessarily in weight but just in overall strength to be able to deal with the pounding a QB might take, especially if he is going to be running some read option.

Makes me wonder if we'll ever see a Hendrix or Kiel package once they have mastered the playbook in which they will be given more of a chance to execute designed running plays. Both of are qualified passers too, so it's not like running the wildcat and becoming one dimensional out of that formation.

Dc, no reason to wonder...your not seeing either of those two unless Golson is hurt or the games out of reach. What "package" can they run the EG can't?

Given his size and the durability issues it could cause, I really wouldn't want to see him tucking it on many designed runs.

  • Dc, what durability issues? He ran plenty...took some really good shots. I know he had the concussion but that has nothing to do with his physical stature. He has never had issues with durability in his entire career.
I know there are those who would feel better if he was...I don't know say 6-4 and 220 like Dayne Crist? A guy who was hurt quite often ........physical size is not an indicator of ones durability..
