Golson one of the top 10 "pleasant surprises" of spring football

  • According to CBS's Bruce Feldman, Irish sophomore Everett Golson was the ninth most pleasant surprise in college football this spring. Here's the rest of Feldman's list.

It*s always interesting to see and hear about which players look poised to have breakout seasons after emerging in the spring. We hear more and more about these types of guys nowadays thanks to the way the sport is covered, and sometimes these players live up to the hype. Sometimes not. This week*s Top 10 list: the most pleasant surprise guys of the spring:

  • ND hype machine in full gear. A pleasant surprise would have been him winning the starting job.

Maybe he did. What would be the benefit of naming him the starter at the end of spring? I would rather they all be working their butts off trying to get in the best position to secure the job in the fall.

  • That's ridiculous, I had pegged him as the seventh most pleasant surprise.

  • If Kelly had name Golson the starter after spring practice, I would have seriously doubted his coaching acumen. Even if Golson far outshone the other contenders, I think you want to engender the strongest competition possible throughout the summer. You want every QB candidate to think he has a legitimate shot at the starting spot, because you want him out there developing chemistry with the receivers, and pushing the other QB contenders to develop more quickly and completely. I completely understand the desire to breathe that sigh of relief that comes with believing we've found the answer, but I think it's better that we wait with baited breath and then GASP! when we see the result of the competition come fall.

I disagree. I think the benefits of the 1st team offense having a constant at the QB position far outweigh the benefits of competition. The offense and defense need to have a leader they can trust and depend on. A starter should have been named during spring with notice that nothing is guaranteed. The valuable time lost in " simplifying the playbook" was huge. Now our most experienced QB is out indefinitely and we're taking one step forward but two steps back. Kelly needs to name a starter to give some form of continuity to this offense or it's another mid-level bowl and sluggish offense this year.

  • We need him to be a "pleasant surprise" in the fall, lol. We have had enough guys look good in spring ball then not get it done in the fall. We need him to take off in the fall.
