Herbstreit's Take On Notre Dame

  • Herbie will be flying in to SB as soon as he's done cutting Urbie's grass and washing his car! Give me a break!

Herbie's gotten smarter since he wised up and moved out of Columbus! Hard to disagree with any of the points he makes.

I did cringe a little when I heard him make the point that if we win Saturday, it's basically a two game season.nono

Herbstreit said this, which wasn't included in the story:

"You’ve still got BYU, Pitt, BC and Wake. Easy for us, right, to sit here and say you’re only a couple games away. The two big ones, anyway, on the road at Oklahoma and on the road at USC you can make a pretty strong argument for those being the toughest games they play all year."

True BMD, Kelly has definitely emphasized defensive recruiting more than offense since arriving. But lets not forget, and keep in mind that I am SLOW to praise Weis, that our best defenders (Slaughter, Motta, Teo, Fox, Calabrese, KLM, Shembo, Jackson) are all Weis recruits(not sure here about all the juniors-shembo and jackson- as to WHEN they committed). Weis didnt leave an empty defensive cupboard.

I def think Weis left the cupboard a lot more full then when he got here.

But I think the debate can be made that Teo isn't as good under Weis as he developed under Kelly.

Carlo I love the guy but he's a tween starter/2nd string and he's not blazing.

KLM it took 4 years, Fox jury is still out.

    Motta is dang good.

But look at how the younger people Kelly recruited beat out the older ones.

    BMD

  • For a lot of years we did not give Herbie much to talk about. We did have a high school defense in many ways... poor tackling, slow on the edges, 10 yard cushions on wide outs. Even when we went to BCS bowls we learned that we probably did not belong there. Six years without beating a Top ten team.

We are not like that any more and Herbie is noticing.

It was slow as molasses and is the reason Charlie got fired.

Think about this, Charlie recruits defense like Kelly does you think Kelly is even here?

Kelly has openly said we had to build the defense up, and man has he. It's the reason why Herbie doesn't say high school defense anymore

I won't argue the defense was elite fast, or even good fast, but high school speed was over the top. I don't care how you put it, that was an extreme exaggeration.

Why don't you ask him his views on the Buckeyes? Ask him straight up if this defense would shut down the Buckeyes. He would say no. He's a homer from the word 'go'. You guys are all giddy because we're doing well, so you choose to overlook all the nasty stuff he has had to say about us over the years. Lose to Stanford, and we will hear it all over again. I live in Buckeyeland. I know what people like Herbie think. That said, Go Irish!

I don't really agree with this. He gets as much crap from Buckeye fans as he does anyone else because he is pretty actively not a homer. The OSU folks hate it.

I guess you missed over the past couple years when he called out Ohio State and then buckeye fans were even giving him death threats. Herbie is always honest. Does he lean a bit towards OSU? Yah probably, everyone has at least a slight bias. But he has always been pretty accurate and fair on ND. Most people just dont want to admit it.

Never, in my life, would I have thought that he would have talked so highly of Notre Dame.

herbstreit is a wolf in sheep's clothing, i believe he relishes when ND is down. he was pretty spot on with his analysis in the article, but i would'nt trust him to date one of my daughters.......rant

Run the ball. Stop the run. You win, or lose, up front.

    Coach_Clancy

  • Just stop with the "Herbstreit is a homer" nonsense. Not many people after the OSU scandal broke lobbied more for the firing of Tressel and basically slammed the whole athletic department and said OSU needs to stop recruiting players like Pryor.

We have to pay Diaco whatever the heck he wants to keep him at Notre Dame.

People like you are the ones' that gave Ty Willingham and Charlie
Weiss their big contracts after a good year, didn't work. Last year and the year before the defense wasn't that good. The defense has improved a great deal so Diaco gets that credit, but what happens next year will more likely tell the story, life after Manti. I'm sure coach Diaco
is making a good salary and may get some increases, but hold the turnip truck, on the pay whatever it takes.

While I agree that he has said some harsh comments over the past several years, I have always thought that he has been pretty fair. Now I say that realizing that ESPN is built upon hyperbole. And when ND is down it gets ratings saying they are terrible and will never be relevent again. So knowing that, I do think that Herbstreit has been accurate in most of his comments.

Being from Columbus maybe you can answer my question: Is it true that Herbie moved out of Columbus because he was getting threats from Buckeye fans, for being honest about the program?
