Here Is Why We Shouldn't Count Out Rees Just Yet

  • Now in no way am I saying I want to see him start over everyone else, but you can't rule him out at this point and here is my take on why.

With only 16 starts under his belt he sits at 8th for most passing yards at ND, that is actually quite an accomplishment.

As of right now he owns the completion percentage record for ND.

Kelly might be thinking of running a multiple TE set this season and if Rees can take care of the ball I feel he's accurate and experienced enough to win the job when his suspension is up.

He has the most experience and knowledge of the game/playbook of any of the QBs.

And while I can't believe he did it, Calabrese stood up for him when he was arrested. He has to command some sort of respect and leadership in the locker room for that to happen

I'm not saying that he will start or that he should, I'm just saying don't count him out as of yet. Also keep in mind this is being typed very close to the end of a 16 hour work day. I may just be getting delirious

  • The completion percentage is a function of Kelly's offense. 16 games is a lot, when ND was at her apex a QB would only get maybe 2 years of starts, so him having almost 2 years in a pass oriented offense does not at all surprise me that he ranks on that list.

The question is at the margin would someone else have put up better numbers AND not turned the ball over at the rate he did. Also look at his numbers after Navy last year - not so good.

As far as CC. I believe he is just one of those guys whose is loyal to the uniform and not the player per se. Not that he and Rees are not buds, or that the team does not respect Rees, but that CC would have stuck up for anyone on his team because he loves Our Lady and Our Lady's football.

As I see it Rees is done at ND unless EG and AH either get hurt or totally sh-t the bed. Either of those is bad news for Irish fans.

Absolutely..Tommy has won a game at Yankee Stadium, the LA Coliseum, and The Sun Bowl against Miami. Clearly he does not possess the athleticism of Golson or Hendrix or Kiel, but he does have self confidence and the respect of his teammates. He is not even as old as Jimmy Clausen was when Clausen started his first game. It is not unreasonable to think he will continue to improve. As you say, though, doesn't mean he is the one who is the best, but it is absolutely a big negative that he won't be in Dublin for the Navy game.

Thank you. I don't think Rees is a world-beater by any stretch, nor do I think his ceiling includes NFL potential.

But looking at the quarterback depth chart, sure there is presumably plenty of talent. But talent is really only part of the equation when it comes to winning college football games. I've still yet to see someone with a better grasp of Kelly's offense.

Just because a kid can make plays with his feet doesn't mean he has the better grasp of what Kelly is trying to accomplish, nor does it mean he can better execute it.

Rees isn't hanging around because he's a super swell guy.

  • Wise thoughts. I hope Golson is ready to play and never gives up the starting role. Still, Tommy's experience could be very valuable if needed. If nothing else, I hope he's really, really there for the youngsters, and completely dedicated to helping them learn to be their very best. I believe he's that kind of team player.

Now we are talking Mr. Rice, I believe, as I have stated several times on this thread, that he is that type of ND person. I look forward to seeing him with the clipboard shouting encouragement and high fiving his successors as they come off the field after a great play or providing support if they have made a bad play. What a great advertisement for him, the program and ND that will prove to be............oh and if we need him...not a bad back up in a pressure situation.

    Again, well said!

  • Tommy's experience is useless and NOT a strength. Experience is only a strength when you learn from your mistakes and grow as a QB. Tommy has made the same
mistakes in year one as he has done again in the most recent spring game showing ZERO improvement. And don't try to tell me he knows the offense better and is a game manager. He turned it over 19 TIMES last year! 19! Half in the redzone directly taking points off the board! Unless giving the ball to the other team is part of Kelly's offense, he doesn't know it that great.

  • I wish tommy well but hope EG is our guy and pans out for us. However, I also understand that our AD and Kelly like to get their paychecks from the university. Getting their paychecks depends a great deal on how our football team plays. If Reese ends up the starter, I'm sure it's because he is the best we have.

    bill2018

  • So your saying whoever the coach pics is 100% the best we have? So coaches have never made a bad decision or a wrong one? It's not that simple.

Maybe NDShepard knows better than Kelly? Just saying! Well maybe not, well said Bill, agree on both points.

  • Holy crap. There is no way no how anyone can find a glimmer of hope on why Rees should start. Being 8th all time at ND in passing is not that great of an accomplishment considering football wasn't a passing game for very long. Throw in the fact ND has always been more of a running team until Weiss came. Throw in the fact Rees can't stretch the field at all because his arm sucks which btw will never be fixed. This allows teams to basically play defense against Nd just like Pitt, BC, Florida St, USC, and Standford. Offensively they were some of the worst games in a long time.

I agree James. I don't think anyone wants him to start but he will be a solid backup and a good ND graduate. That's all I hope for the young man.
