Here it is, a crucial time for the future of College football

  • and the playoff situation and who else but the AD from the independent, "irrelevant", "stuck in the past" Notre Dame steps up to the podium and leads the press conference with all others Conference commissioners behind him. Love it. Nice job JS...ND still front and center despite our lack of success the past 20 years.

  • Well said, Merlin. Hats off to JS, who has been a real player in all these discussions and negotiations. He's an invaluable point man for the university in this high stakes game, and your comments about ND being "irrelevant" are right on the money.

Now, if they can just start winning.....

  • Excellent job, Merlin. Pretty much sums up the whole picture of college football no matter what the odds.

  • It was interesting and great to see our AD leading the press conference. Now hopefully he can work on getting us some better access to other bowls if we arent in the playoff/major bowl picture. I have faith he can.

    First time POTW for 4/18/2011-4/24/2011.

  • Well put. Must be what Bama fans were complaining about with Bill King this morning. I heard the tail end of it.

  • Give the masses yet another reason to dislike ND. They will almost certainly look at it as an entitlement thing and no doubt Cowterd will be ranting about "Who does ND think they are?" today. ND may not be relevant on the field lately but they most certainly are very relevant to College Football.

  • What I really wonder is that if he was asked to "lead" and be the head speaker for the press yesterday, if he asked to do this himself or out of how influential or of his role he had in the meetings...either way Jack is either the man for 1) asking for the responsibility or for 2)being asked to do it.

I would really hope he is not asking for the responsibility. It would be such a better kick in the face to the haters if he was asked to do it.

  • Though I appreciate the position of significance and relevance that his involvement infers, I long for the day when ND's money is less of a reason for this significance and more due to winning.

We shouldn't pat ourselves on the back because we're "still relevant" because of Jack's negotiating acumen and depth of ND's wallet.

Thats not the point. We know we havent done anything in 20 + years. But its heavily ironic to all the naysayers that ND is no longer relevant, lost in the college football word of today, and doesnt factor in anymore yet leading one of the biggest changes is Notre Dame and its AD. Of course we all would like to see the significance on the field, but the brand/blue blood status/importance in college football remains.

The only negative to this that I can see, is that if the NCAA President job comes up again soon, Jack Swarbrick is likely the top candidate to take the job. In the meantime, he is doing a kickass job as AD of Notre Dame.

Excellent post, Merlin. I have been quite amused by the fact that all
the articles and comments dealing with the BCS and playoff meetings
have had to say "the eleven conference commissioners and Notre Dame
athletic director Jack Swarbrick...." Pointedly, they never mentioned USC's
AD, nor the AD's of Michigan, or Alabama, or LSU or The Ohio State,
or Stanford, or Oklahoma, or Texas, etc. Those ADs stayed home and
were not there. Perhaps, they may not even have been consulted,
who knows. And then, to have Jack make the announcement, priceless!!

    hemy

  • The reason our AD is out front is partly because of what ND represents in quality and class, but also because JS is one of the most skilled in the lot. His skill is the reason that so many turn to him for the difficult decisions.

We have a champion leading us - let's celebrate him and what he is offering college football today.
