  • Please honor our veterans this Memorial Day that have given their lives in defense of this great country we live in. Speaking as a Vietnam Combat Veteran, I know the feeling of seeing many good friends lose their lives because they believed with everything in them that this country of ours was worth the sacrifice.

So please, if you can, go to a memorial day ceremony or service Monday and say Thanks to the Veterans that gave their all . They will be watching and will appreciate your caring.

God Bless all of you, God Bless America and God Bless Notre Dame.

  • I'm with you, will be visiting my son and daughter-in-law in Tulsa this weekend. Will be attending Memomial Day services with them, honoring all our veterans and lost friends. Will be at Notre Dame and the Grotto on the 31st. Special prayers for lost friends, veterans, men and women serving today and one for you and your health. Welcome home.

  • Sir,

Thank you because of the Vietnam vets those of us that come home now come home to cheers and handshakes. A lot different than what you all came home to. I truly believe the Vietnam vets change the culture and ensure that us as service member now dont have to go thru what you did. So sir from an Iraq and now Afghanistan vet... THANK YOU for everything you have done for us.

Agree with one addition: remember and honor those that served and returned home as well. They put themselves in harm's way and took the risk of giving their life for us too. Thanks for serving for us Naples!

And a special thanks to those who didn't make it back.

  • Agreed, the sacrifice that these men and women endure to protect our country is something that so many take for granted. The freedom that so many of us enjoy does not come without a cost. May God Bless those who have served and are currently serving so that we may sleep safe at night. Many thanks to the families, whose sons and daughters wear the uniforms of courage, honor and integrity for a country that is so blessed.

  • Thanks FC! If it were not for Vets like you I would have not had the opportunities I have had both in and out of my Navy days!

    Thank you and Hoo-Rah!

One little quick story zeke. I got out of the Army after my second tour in 1969. As I finished at the seperation center at Ft Hood texas (1ST Armored Division) They appraised us of the situation in the country and said that it was advisable for us not to travel home in uniform. Well, after serving two tours and losing many friends in vietnam I said that no sob was going to make mje ashamed of the unoform I wore for 11 years defending this great country. I did wear my uniform home and did encounter some hecklers, but none had anything to do but heckle. Not enough nerve or convection to physically confront me and several others.

Thank you for your service my friend. God Bless you for it.

  • I wouldn't be around if my grandfather (Colonel in the 101st Airborne who was KIA while leading a chopper into enemy fire in an attempt to save a downed crew) wasn't first brave enough to head into similar enemy fire while helping my grandmother sneak out of her St. Mary's dorm room in the middle of the night to go get married.

  • Few things in my life altered my perspective more than watching an A&E Documentary in June 1994 on the 50th anniversary of D-Day. I think of the men who had no shot at survival that day, and remind myself that I have nothing to moan or whine about.

Thank you to all the men and women who have worn that military uniform, and died in it so others might truly live.

  • This is how my great uncle perished in WWII. Both I and my father are named after him. This is from an excellent yet unpublished memoir by Captain Marvin Smith, commanding officer of Company K, 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division (referred to by the Nazis as "Roosevelt's SS").

"Later, I called for our artillery to fire toward our front, where I thought the enemy was. After many rounds, I stopped it. Not wanting to expose many more men to the enemy, I ordered Sgt. Byers and his squad of four or five men to penetrate beyond our lines to test the enemy after our artillery shelling quit. It was with great shock that word come that the enemy was still very much active and had opened up machine gun fire, killing Sgt. Byers. The rest of the squad made it back to safety."

However the preface to the work is perhaps the most fitting thing ever written about the men who fought World War II.

"Perhaps it is to let future generations know what we experienced there. Those who were with me will never need to know. I leave no legacy of fame to cause others to desire my story. Perhaps it is , at long last, to empty myself of long constrained emotions of these experiences."

God bless each and every veteran of this nation. We owe you far more than can ever be repaid!
