If Notre Dame WINS a BCS Title....

  • Will anyone care if it was in a conference when it did it?

Would it really matter that they needed to beat FSU or Boston College in a confence Title game to get into the new playoff system to do it?

Really, if they can stay independent great but if joining a conference could help them get to the goal of winning a NC who would care if they were in a conference when it happen?

An independent NC doesnt mean any more or less right?

If ND has joined the Big east in Football many years ago, they could have established their terms, kept their TV contracts, had multiple more BCS appearances, chances are they would have won at least one, helped shape the Big east even further, and the Big East would not likely be crumbling today. May have even made more money.

    Typical ND.

  • If we win a BCS title i could care less if it was in a conference, i just want to win one. If joining a conference gets it done then thats fine.

  • I want to win a title as much as everyone here, but I also want ND to be a dominant force in College football and have a run like USC did during Pete Carrolls tenure. A streak or almost streak of 5-7 years in a row with 10+ wins would put Notre Dame with the Alabamas and LSUs of college football and shut up the haters with all the 20+ year irrelevance and jokes about the days of our grandfathers.

^^^^^exactly. we need to shut up, stop whinning, and start winning. my hope is to somehow stay independant, at least in football. but something tells me the almighty dollar will have something to say about that......

Run the ball. Stop the run. You win, or lose, up front.

That’s good with me, I just don’t think they could do with the type of schedule they are forced to make each year, joining a conference could help because if you can first dominate in a conference for a number of years odds are you will be able to have that break out year, look how Alabama has re-built their program in just 5 years or so, it could happen at ND, joining a conference allows you a lot of things ND can’t do right now.

They really need a team that can do a lot of things but I think the biggest thing missing in all of this is ND does not have an identity, what type of team is ND? A pass happy shootout team or a lunch pail Defensive team? It seems to change every year. When you’re in a conference I think it’s easy to build an identity and maintain that identity, look at Wisconsin, Bama, VT, SC, LSU, and all the other successful teams. First they have a pretty stable coaching staff and two they all have an identity.

I don’t know if joining a conference would automatically solve the issue but I think it would help. I think Brian Kelly knows what identity he wants his team to have his biggest issue so far I think is getting them to embrace it on the field and not just off it.

Here is one little thought. Every ND game is on national tv. if ND joins a conference many here would not see most of the games they now do.

  • I don't think most of us would dismiss a championship because we were in a conference. However, we don't, at this point, have to be in a conference to play for the title, so it's a moot point. Way too many, in my opinion, are overreacting to the current state of conference realignment. It might well be that we'll have to join a conference one day, and that one day may be sooner rather than later. Yet, if it's not a requirement to compete at the highest level, why in the world would we do it? Notre Dame IS tradition, and much of that tradition wouldn't exist had we joined the Big Ten in the 30's. It was the Rockne Ramblers that really cemented our role as the kings of college football. A team without a stadium that traveled every week to take on all comers, and beat them all soundly.

I'm quite willing to change as required. I'm not disposed to change 120 years of tradition because people fear we might be left behind. There will always be a place for Notre Dame in virtually any conference. College football will never, ever be college football without the Irish, and everyone knows it, even when we stink.
