If You Could Check Only 1 For 2012, Which Would It Be?

  • I can't handle another year of losing to UofM. To win all of our home games to me would be the best thing for this program of the options that you presented. I will pick A.

I would pick A, go unbeaten at home. The bonus is that Michigan is home. It's also when most recruits are taking their official so it will help recruiting. It also guarantees a pretty good season. 3-3 on the road gets us to 9-3, which I think would be worse case if we are unbeaten at home.

C only adds a guarantee over Michigan State, B is a nice win but not as important as a strong overall season and home win over Michigan is just as important, and D would be nice but we get recruits all the time that don't translate into great seasons.

I was thinking this too. Guarantee 7 wins, steel two away games, and, bam, 9-win season. In 2012, I'll take it.

    A. Finish unbeaten at home.

    B. Beat USC.

    C. Sweep Michigan and Michigan State for the first time since 2004.

    D. Land Ryan Green, Jaylon Smith and Isaac Rochell.

You certainly know how to throw up the tricky questions there LuLu. I like A., but with the Navy game in Ireland a HOME game, and the Miami game in Chi-Town a HOME game, that skew's that category. I'll take B. last game of season, their turf, them probably in the National Title picture, definitely BCS material. And if we beat them atthat stage of the season, I would have to say we probably had a very successful season to be in that spot to begin with.

  • As much as I hate losing to USC, I pick A. Are we considering the Navy and Miami games as home games? If so, that is 8 wins, with wins over UM and Stanford included. We could end up with 10 wins if we split the 4 away games (Mich St., OU, BC and USC), which I could see this team doing.

EDIT- Just read your new post Lou, I would still pick A and count on the team at least splitting the remainder of the season ending with a very good 9 or 10 win season.

  • I'll go with B because if ND beats a very good USC team A, C and D probably take care of themselves.

  • My first choice is E. All of the Above, but since that means a NC I guess I'll go with B, beat SC. I hate those guys and it would be a nice way for Manti to leave ND. Did I mention that I hate Lame Kitten.

  • I would go with A since that includes a win over Michigan at night, on prime time,
with lots of recruits in attendance---which could very well get us D as a result.

It would mean seven wins (if you include Miami), so all we need do to get to 10
is to beat Navy in Dublin, BC in Boston (both doable) and pull the upset at
    Oklahoma.

Under this scenario, the only losses would be at MSU and USC.

I can live with that at 10-2, excellent recruiting, and a real step up to
2013 (when we get MSU and USC at home).

    What happened to Wake?

My "home" wins are Purdue, Michigan, Stanford, BYU, Wake, Pittsburgh and Miami. Unlike Lou, I think
Miami is a "home" game since it would have been played at South Bend if we wanted to play it there. Navy to me is an away game since we rotate "home and away" with Navy and Navy played at South Bend last year. It's really Navy's game. But, win seven at home makes you relatively speaking a good team and gets you to nine wins with wins over Navy and BC.

I recall that one of the very unusual aspects of Gerry Faust's regime was that, upon occasion, he could win against
reputable teams (Michigan, Penn State, USC and especially No. 1 Pitt in '82). But, he could not win consistently. Winning all games at home gives us the first step to achieve the consistency we have sorely lacked since the Holtz heyday. Moreover, I think Lou is dead-on---we have simply got to make winning at home a trademark of our program.

It is one thing to lose but to constantly lose, even to the Syracuse's and Connecticut's of this world, at South Bend is something that really gets me. Win them all, yes, but for God's sake, win at South Bend!!!

    hemy

  • I love hypotheticals. And this is a good one. Not one of them is easily discarded.

I would like to first know when we were undefeated at home. I remember Holtz talking in 1986 about reestablishing home field. And look what happened. Getting those 3 would also go a long way to seeing to that goal. Throw in a top flight WR and CB and it SHOULD happen.

I will first discard the win over USC. Not letting them have it naturally, but I feel the other three accomplish short term goals as well as long term ones. The two games most highlighted on my schedule are Stanford and Michigan. We're 0-Kelly there and 0-our last 6. They are both at home and both beatable. Get those games and you keep those type of recruits in "D" and even attract Doug Randolph, maybe Anzalone and the top flight WR and CB we crave.

I guess Im talking myself into the original thought, undefeated at home.
