Irish Combine Results

For someone who played as well as he did all season and in the championship game, Zeke's numbers are just shocking!

I don't usually pay too much attention to these things, but I am intrigued about what in this post earned a total score of -1?!

I guess my point in questioning Longo is the idea that we have some kind of unique advantage in having him as our S&C coach. This is not supported by combine result. I especially emphasize the bench press because that is the one thing that can be changed significantly by a good lifing program. In 4 years, I find it hard to believe a hard working 215 pound kid can't get 15-20 reps. This is something that should get constant work in college, whereas these kids aren't constantly running shuttles and 40 yard sprints. Seems even HS kids start working bench and squats.

Also, there is a correlation between players in the NFL and success at Notre Dame. When ND was at its best it produced tons of NFL players and this just feeds on itself. Kind of like what's happening at Bama today. That's why they get so many 5 stars, because they think it gives them their best chance to play in the NFL. Is it a coincidence that the first time ND produces 2 first round picks, they land more 5 stars than they have in years?

I only have a few months of closely monitoring the S&C program and the attention to dietary analysis/nutrition philosophy and all I can say is that I am very impressed with what we have at ND. My son worked out with some of the best guys there are - from former NFL greats to nationally sponsored power lifters to defending state champion body builders to highly touted agility and speed guys - add this to the fact that we have been studying nutrition etc for many years so we know a little bit about that as well. All I am saying is that we have some legit comparables and past experiences even though Steve is fresh in the system.
I am not sure why some guys underperform at the combine - it could be a variety of reasons but I can assure you one thing - it isnt for lack of preparation from the coach or failure of the system. Like Lou said - the S&C coach's primary job is to prepare these guys to win games and perform at their best at ND and using that measuring stick I'd give the man a raise.

Glad to get feedback from someone in the know and glad to hear positive feedback on the S & C program. Without an inside view, we don't know much about the program, so all we can see is poor combine reuts by some players. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  • I also think we are losing sight of one thing here. These kids going to the combine are not necessarily training at ND or being trained by Longo at this point. Teo was in Florida I believe and some of the others were training back home as well. The agents and other advisers tell them to trim down, bulk up, etc - and this impacts things like the 225lb reps and 40 time.

Now personally here is my take: This team for the past three seasons has NOT wilted in the 4th quarter. That is due to increased mental toughness and increased strength and conditioning. I am pleased at this point.
