Irish Have 2 More Years To Avoid Embarrassment

  • With today's announcement that a 4 team playoff will name its first National Champion Jan 2015, Notre Dame has 2 more seasons to win a BCS Bowl. If they do not, they will go 0-for-the-BCS-Era. Even Stanford, Utah and Boise State will have won a BCS Bowl. This would be an unthinkable footnote to history should this happen. If someone told you when the BCS Era started in 1997 that ND would not win one the BCS Bowls in the next 17 years, what would you have said? There is no way I would have believed that, yet we are facing that very likely possibility at this point.
In the end it won't matter much if we start doing well once the playoff is created, but I am not sure any of us are ready to start counting those chickens. To me, it is very important that we win one of these bowls before Jan 2015

  • Seeing as though that Bob Davie was our coach (Never ever liked the hire knew we were in big trouble) Yeah I could see the writing on the wall.

Sure, but 17 years of it? I could not have predicted that.

The hires made after Holtz one after the other were mind boggling. Ty after Davie gave us all alot of false hope with that 8-0 start. Then Charlie who had no clue of the college game although I commend him because he proved that ND could sill reel in the blue chippers, he just could not reach college kids. Kelly is the first smart hire in 20 years. Lets just all hope he gets that killer instinct back that he has seemed to have lost as a coach somewhere in between Cincy & South Bend.

I have always believed that CW gets too much credit for "proving ND could still recruit blue chippers." It isn't like ND went decades or even 5 years without recruiting blue chippers. Davie had some excellent classes and Ty's first year was above average.

Not that CW shouldn't get credit for recruiting in certain areas, he just is significantly over-rated by some ND fans from my perspective.

To the point of the thread, I am a fan of a playoff but I believe "success" will be hard to achieve going forward for many teams. If you make it to the "final four" but lose a couple years in a row are you a failure.?

Winning a BCS game is extremely overrated due to BS conference tie-ins that make a lot of games nothing worthwhile. OU beat UConn a couple years ago in a BCS game ... pffttt congrats

While the match-ups may not always be great, the BCS is still how fans and the media still measure success for a program, whether you like it or not. Our perception around college football is that we are only relevant in terms of fan base, dollars spent, and history. We are no longer looked at as relevant on the field because, in all honesty, we haven't done anything to warrant any attention whatsoever in the past 20 years. If you want evidence of our futility during the BCS era, let's try this: Our record was 107-78. We averaged just over 7 wins per season, and had a winning percentage of .578. So you may want to call the BCS games overrated, but by all reasonable amounts of measure the results are basically the same: We have been an average program at best during the BCS Era. Sorry, sometimes the truth hurts.

you are talking two different things. Winning a BCS bowl over the next two years isn't going to change our futility the past 20 years. His point, which I agree, is you are making too big of a deal regarding if we don't win a BCS bowl the next 2 years. The ND haters have enough ammunition so barring a MNC in the next two years, nothing changes.

Or said another way, if we beat a 8-4 UConn in a BCS bowl, you think that changes something?

I think it removes the ability of people to say "Notre Dame didn't win a BCS bowl game. EVER." Does it fix the past 20 years? NO. It simply removes that comment. But you can't dismiss that comment by saying the "BCS Bowls were overrated". That is just BS spin to make yourself feel good about your program.
