Malik Zaire, a junior dual-threat QB that committed to Notre Dame last month, shares conversations he had with head coach Brian Kelly on the future of the offense.

  • I actually believe, and it might sound a bit weird, but that all 4 guys we have on the roster are keeping Zaire's seat warm for 2014.

  • When BK is telling Zaire that he has "everything he(BK) wanted" I'm impressed - I don't believe that BK is throwing fluff at Zaire. Like psdo51 I liked what I saw on his film. BK and staff are building this program - ND is on the way back - GO IRISH!

No, Kiel will be our starter.

  • I really do like Zaire, and I don't think the QB picture will be so crowded after this season because I feel whoever loses the battle between Golson/Rees will transfer. I would say Hendrix is a possibility as well, but he is in the Notre Dame pre-med program and I don't think he would leave that unless he gets a perfect offer from a school who has a decent football program and a comparable education; perhaps UCLA/Northwestern/Stanford. I don't see that happening though. As far as Gunner, I think he realizes he's too green to start Game One and if he isn't the starter by year end, he should be able to have four years of eligibility left in what I think will still be a shaky QB situation for the Irish.. He's not going anywhere.

  • It's pretty obvious that Zaire has all the tools that Kelly is looking for in a QB. He's not a refined passer yet, but he has everything the other guys don't, except for probably Hendrix.

I think it's possible that Hendrix wins the starting spot. He has a lot of talent. I think his missing ingredient is confidence but that is the one thing that could emerge almost over night and certainly by mid August. I don't see Rees transferring because he will play regardless of who the starter is. He only has 2 years left and if he is still in school in September then he would have to quit, then sit out 2013 as well, if he wanted to go somewhere. I can't see him leaving, especialy after last year's scenario where he took over for Crist at half time of opening day.
I do think it's possible that Zaire starts in 2014. I am also interested in watching the QBs play today. I really believe it is anybody's spot to win. 2014 is a lifetime away but Zaire really is impressive. Kiel has a great physique. Whoever is the QB then will be very good. Not sure I can say that this year, though he will be better than last year.
