Irish fall to UConn in Big East final

  • Geno Auriemma became the fastest college coach to 800 wins ever by topping Notre Dame 63-54 tonight in Hartford. The Irish are now 0-6 in Big East Championship games.

  • Somewhat predictable. Nobody beats UConn three times in a year, especially when two of the games are in their backyard. The Huskies played with more intensity than the Irish. Strong D, and poor shooting by the Irish. They were just beating ND to the ball most of the night.

The announcer commented that the Irish came out in a zone in the second half, and took control. Then, for no apparent defense, they abandoned the zone, and the game swung back in UConn's favor. Not sure what that's about.

I think Bob Diaco called Muffet and suggested changing the defense to throw them off.

Seriously, UConn went right after Peters and Novosel and got them in early foul trouble and then dominated the boards. ND looked tired and their shooting was abysmal. They were missing wide open shots. It wasn't the UConn defense, which was good but not that good. McBride shot well and Turner hit a big 3 to close the half but the team looked whipped.
Not the end of the world. The NCAA is an easier schedule and no more trips to Hartford!

  • It was going to be a tall order to beat UCONN three times. Lets hope we get back on track in the tourney and the ND women go all the way!

    First time POTW for 4/18/2011-4/24/2011.

  • My question is the Big East tournament always played on their court? Seems unfair.

  • It would have been amazing to beat UConn three times this season. You could see this one coming and UConn was ready for the task. Intensity was the key and UConn was ready from the start. Overall how can anyone complain about this season...now lets get ready for the Big Dance.

You're right, the intensity was the difference. They forced turnovers, took the Irish out of their rhythm and consistently beat them to the ball, and down the court. There was an inevitability to it, and it absolutely does not detract from what they've accomplished, nor what they can still achieve.
