    C. hemy, your friends actually stand there and listen to that whole answer? I just say God only knows, but 9 wins would be nice.

    CactusMike,

Usually I ask them to sit first. I also say they can listen to my answer or
check it out with Jack Nolan. Usually, they listen and we chat about it
but like many other things, its mostly "bar talk."

  • Lou, I am really excited to see exactly where Kelly has this program. It is not a friendly schedule but I really hope this is the season Kelly starts showing the fans exactly why he was brought here. He will need to settle on a QB and hope the WR and CB positions develop but this is a season I view as a marking point for Kelly and ND, I think Swarbrick realizes there needed to be some rebuilding so I would like to think w/o a disastrous 3-9 or 5-7 season Kelly will have 5 years to build something.

I almost look at 2010 as a warmup season and last year as year 1, knows how things are done now, whats expected. Lets see if the team is really buying in and if Kelly can start running the offense that got him to ND and not the watered down version of the past two season, the QB in the current 2013 class really has me interested.

I guess this is a "setting the table" type year for me, but that doesnt mean it cant be a successful season and a true spring board to 2013.

  • Other. It is all in your perspective. 2007-2009 record was 16-21. Kelly has won 16 in 2 years. Yes, could have won more. Lines in 07-09 were routinely manhandled...not just by juggernauts at USC or Stanford but by Navy, Uconn and Pitt late in games. Team is much different now. Yes QB still a work in progress but all around much improved....I give them a chance to win any game in 2012....if this was 3 years ago with this schedule, you would be raising a white flag now.

  • Come on we suffered through Davie and Ty so there is no way I am less optimistic about this season than I was during those years! We have more talent than 10 of the 12 teams on the schedule, it's been a tough 2 year stretch but we have an elite coach in Coach Kelly. With the fact that we have a good OL and DL that can control the trenches and a stable of very talented RB's that rivals any team that we will face there is a lot of potential on this team even with some obvious questions. The thing is many of the teams we face have questions as well.

  • Combination of A & D.

I've just seen way too much hype end in utter disappointment. It doesn't mean I want Notre Dame to win any less, and it doesn't mean I don't think the Irish can ascend to the top of the polls on a regular basis again.

But it's getting more and more difficult to spin mediocrity into the cusp of greatness. Show me.

  • I'm not optimistic at all because of inexperience at the QB position and even if they do have the experience back there he stinks. The CB situation is down right scary especially a few of the teams ND will play this year. The receivers are very underwhelming unless they get a young Guy to step up and they lost their best pass rusher in recent memory. With Diacos unagressive defense where is the rush gonna come from? More and more I look at it 6-6 is not unrealistic to believe.

  • Sometimes, I feel like a C, but mostly I think I'm of the A cloth.
If we get through 2014 season and have no 10 win seasons to show for it, then I wil be of the "we are finished as a major program" cloth.

  • Realizing that it is probably towards B, I will never enter a season with no expectations. I am a fan, and yes that means different things to different people, but it means to me that we have flaws and a few tough obstacles to overcome, but I will always have faith that a good season is right there for us. So I am not giving up on this year yet, in fact quite the opposite I view this year as a big opportunity to show the doubters what ND is. Going to be for years to come.

  • I am actually really optimistic. I don't see us going undefeated but I do think we beat either Oklahoma or USC and I also see us finally beating UofM. I think the talent is there to win ten games eventhough the schedule is brutal. I do kind of see it as a setting the table for 2013 though. I think BK is close very close. Hopefully we as a fanbase are patient enough to let it unfold. Go IRISH!

    IrishDustin

  • No, it was 2007 for me. We all knew just by looking at the roster turnover it was going to be a long season. Not 3-9 long, mind you, but I expected no more than 5 wins. You don't lose your leading passer, receiver, rusher and tackler and maintain BCS level play.

Mine is more B than anything. We are too green in the secondary to face the two top passing QBs in the country, plus we should be green at the QB position. Next year sets up better with a more favorable schedule and more experience at critical spots.

  • Interesting question, Lou. My position is definitely "B." I think we're setting the table for next year. However, as an eternal optimist, I'm hoping that the QB situation will sort itself out in a favorable fashion in the first two games. We were in the process of destroying Michigan last year, even with Rees, and we manhandled Michigan State the first half. So, if we have better QB play as a result of Golson or Hendrix mixing with Rees or taking over for him, I wouldn't be surprised with a 4-0 start. If we get there, some momentum might build.

I think Kelly is a really good football coach. I think this team will be far better than his first two. The schedule is hideous, but I don't care if we lose a few games while playing really well. I think we can escape the season with not more than three losses.

Of course, I am an eternal optimist. I have less confidence this year since 2007, which was by far the least confident I had ever been. Still, I think by game six or seven we might begin to really show what Kelly is building, so I won't be surprised with a win in Norman or L.A. I know it seems far fetched that we could reach a BCS game this year, but no one thought the Irish would win the title in '88, either. We'll need some guys to step up at CB and WR, and we just have to get better production and fewer turnovers from the QB's. But, I think all that's possible. We can't afford many injuries. If that bug hits, all bets are off. But, I'm counting on some pretty good football this year, and if we struggle because of lack of talent/experience at a few positions, I'm okay with that. Next year is the year I think we'll really start to see a progression to the top of the heap.
